I think it's awesome! And the ones I've seen state who they nominate next, the challenge must be completed within 24 hrs, and if they don't do the ice they have to donate. Preferably they do both the ice and the donation.

It's all fun and for a good cause. Much better than rioting and looting don't you think?

Yes, I did both---ice and donation. And you really don't have to do it within 24 hours...

So fun to be challenged by people from my past and pass it on to some I wish I saw more frequently.

I agree, but those who follow celebrities are gullible. One can make a donation without all the silliness.

Re: O/T ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Don't understand how some can not understand.

You have proven the effectiveness of it by showing that you are aware. Again, you accept the challenge, do it for the amusement of those who nominated you and their social media friends, who now will pass it along. YOU ALSO DONATE, although it is not in the "rules", of course you do, for the delight of being nominated by people who respect you and feel that you will get it.

So much money has now been raised for such a terrible disease. What I can't understand is how that can be a bad thing. If you are unable to do because of a water shortage, or fear of getting an ice cube in your eye, that's perfectly understandable. Now that you are aware, I hope you will donate.

ITA. There are other more practical ways for ALS awareness.

...and none of them have worked.

For those that don't understand, even if you take the challenge, you of course make a donation anyway.

They have raised nine times as much THIS year as they have in the past.

Genius.

I was just going to say the same thing. There is an understanding that you will make a donation anyway. The ice-bucket video serves as a means of spreading the word, not as an excuse to forgo a donation.

According to the "rules" I just read, if you do the ice bucket video you donate $10. If you DO NOT do it, you donate $100. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to the charity to NOT do it?!?! Still makes no sense. On a sad note, the young man who came up with this ice bucket idea died yesterday in a diving accident.

Re: O/T ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

This challenge is far from a bad thing, ALS is the most HORRIBLE disease. Anyone who has watched anyone suffer with this knows!!!! A family member recently passed away from this.

Everyone I know who has participated has donated whatever amount they can afford in addition to taking the challenge. And on a more practical note, most folks cannot afford to make a $100 donation, so the challenge allows these folks to participate with a smaller monetary donation that they might not otherwise make. It's a win-win, so I'm really boggled as to why some posters are so negative about it. {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

Re: O/T ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

My daughter and her friends are doing it tomorrow. I asked her what the benefit is and she said that although they don't have money to send (young teens) they are doing it to raise awareness. I really did not get the point but after thinking about it I realized that this young group of teens know about ALS and how debilitating it can be. It is at least a step in the right direction.
