Re: Need help with Retin-A usage

I have been using Retin-A for several years and it still can cause peeling and dryness.

The dryness has gotten worse actually.

I am down to the 0.025% every 3rd night for now. It's worse in winter.

I get so frustrated that I sometimes consider NOT using it anymore. I have had to take week long breaks from it this winter.

Hyacinth

I agree about using for years too and still peel. I am doing better because of mixing with moisturizer. I can only use once a week in the winter and 2x in spring/summer. So, its not good to mix ?

chloesmoma All suggestions are worth mentioning here. It's appreciated. But there are lots of posters here so there are usually a variety of opinions. I don't think anyone was saying you were wrong. Just that different people have found different things that work for them. Once you start to google there is a lot of info of all kinds about using Retin-A. But thanks for sharing today.

Re: Need help with Retin-A usage

I use Retin-A in the weakest strength 0.025 cream. I use it alone at night, every night, on clean dry skin; although I started out at only 2 X a week.

I know nothing about Obagi products or system or using in conjection with Retin-A. Not sure how this thread got off on Obagi anyway? That was not part of the original post or asked by the original poster.

Please don't stop. I'm sure there are many that appreciate you advice. I used Maxi-Peel several yrs ago and didn't use a moisturizer. My skin peel for wks and finally stopped leaving me with smooth silky skin. Maxipeel is tretinoin and hydroquinone in a liquid form. When I ran out I tried Retin-A waited and then moisturized before going to bed. I never stopped peeling. So what you said makes sense to me. The tretinoin worked better with no moisturizer, just had several wks. of peeling.

I am now using Azelaic Acid on my skin. I have the acne rosacea type. I haven't been moisturizing after putting in on at night. Should I or just moisturize in the mornings?

Thank you! We appreciate yours and others opinions.

Re: Need help with Retin-A usage

Ask your dermatologist about PruMyx -- it's a prescription cream that can be mixed with equal parts of Retin-A. This cream protects the skin from dryness & burning yet still allows the Retin-A to do it's job.

PruMyx is the generic for Mimyx.

Re: Need help with Retin-A usage

An over the counter product similar to PruMyx is Physiogel Cream by Stiefel Laboratories. Does not have the exact same ingredients as PruMyx but has the same properties; made to reduce redness, dryness and burning of the skin. Both PruMyx and Physiolgel Cream are made by Stiefel Laboratories. Physiogel Cream is available to consumers without a prescription.

Re: Need help with Retin-A usage

for me, I followed my derms advice... Even a slight film left on my hands is effective when applied. So, this makes it easy to have an effective treatment w/o even realizing it! If I use enough cream so that it is seen, this will leave my skin looking flaky the next day. The retin a continues to work throughout the next day. So using too much of it is a waste of time and money for me b/c my skin doesn't look better. Use the tiniest amount for the best effect.

Mixing, probably not. But you can layer as long as it isn't immediately one right over the other.
