Re: Need Some Help with Foundation Please

I'll tell you what has recently helped me. I'm 60 and my skin is not good...wrinkles, of course, plus old acne scars and very large pores. Oh yeah, rosacea, too. Anyway, I recently bought a mini size of the IT CC cream with SPF at Ulta. Everyone seemed to really like this foundation so I had to give it a try. Did not care for it at all the first couple of times I used it!!! Then I was cruising the Internet (Beauty blogs, etc.) one day and saw some really good things about Porefessionals primer by Benefit. I got a small tube of it and I must say I really like it. The primer makes the IT CC cream go on so much nicer. I still don't like the CC cream without the primer. Also, as someone else mentioned, buff the foundation in with a brush. I use the big brush that came with the Tarte foundation. I squeeze a tiny amount of foundation on the top of my left hand, and then dip into it several times with the brush and buff my face using a circular motion. I'm amazed at how little foundation you need when you do it this way. At first I tried to put the CC cream on with my fingers but I could not get that to work. Too much product, and not blending well at all.

Bottom line, using a primer and a brush are my biggest recommendations. This is the Porefessionals primer, but you may already have one you like.

Hope this helps you out some!

@vanity,

You may want to try experimenting with a moisturizing primer before applying your foundation.  Apply the primer after you moisturize.

Also, there are moisturizing setting sprays that give a dewy finish and help to combat a dry look, especially if you are using a powder foundation.  I think setting sprays are the greatest invention since sliced bread!

I second the suggestion to apply your makeup in a lighted 5x or 10x magnified mirror instead of just your bathroom mirror.

There is a blogger named Angie that has a Hot and Flashy blog and YouTube channel for makeup/skincare/anti-aging for those of us over the age of 50.  She has been doing a weekly series called Foundation Friday Over 50 and tests different foundations to try to find ones that are good for older ladies since we have different issues, like wrinkles, lol.  Her reviews are informative, she has a charming personality and is a pleasure to watch.  Anyway, she often tests foundations with and without different primers, so she may be able to give you leads on what would work for you.  Just Google Hot and Flashy and you'll find her.

Hi.  I am in my 60's and sure could use some suggestions.  I have tried every kind of foundation, - IT, BE, Laura Geller, drugstore brands, Clinique, Lancome, etc.  I am sure you can get the picture.  But whenever I finish putting on my makeup for the day, I take a magnifying mirror to check my look, and literally I get sick!  I look so bad.  I see pores, a dry complexion, and lines, etc.  I am looking for a makeup foundation that gives a soft, natural, look.  Not a heavy dried look.  I do use moisturizer first.  I tried IT's poreless powder (white powder) and still see pores.  Please can someone give me some ideas.  I can't believe I leave the house looking like a dried prune.  Thank you very much!

I am 61 and have been using the clarisonic Mia for the last 2 years. It has really made a huge difference in the texture, tone and condition of my skin. Maybe that is what you need to improve your skin before you use and get the good results from make up. I use it once a day; and now there is a super soft brush head  that I use that isn't so stiff and harsh. You need to get rid of the dead skin before any skincare can really help. My skin is very dry too but don't have many lines or wrinkles. But I can tell that my skincare and make up goe on easier and I use less of it too. I don't have a favorite line altho I am really liking Paula's Choice.

I'm in the same age range. I really like Bobbi Brown's foundation stick. I apply with a sponge. I just swipe it one time all over my face. (a little goes a long way) I use her pot rouge blush for just a hint of color on my cheeks. She has two types of finishing powder: one white/invisible and one with highlighting pigments. I just pick one and do a quick swipe over my face aand I'm done. I alwyas get compliments on my skin when I where BB. That never happened to me before.  i only use the magnifying mirror to apply my eye makeup.

Re: Need Some Help with Foundation Please

Used to be 60 (about 22 years ago), and incredibly I still have pretty good skin. I don't buy (or use) a lot of makeup, which may be why the skin is still good.  However, I cannot use any powder foundations - when I do I look like I am being prepared for the viewing.  I've been looking for a really light, but covering, liquid foundation.

I found a new product at Clinique last week, which I really like.  It's a tinted moisturizer called Moisture Surge.   I use a product called Superprimer under it, and the effect is really very nice.  Soft, but well covered. Seems like a very good product for aging skin. Possibly one of the QVC vendors has something similar, but I don't want to wade through a dozen beauty product shows to find it

Re: Need Some Help with Foundation Please

I will echo what @JeanLouiseFinch said about skincare being as, if not more, important than MU. Since my skin has gotten better over the past few years because of my skincare really working for me, I've noticed a big change in my MU application. You need to have the best canvas  you can. Also, I like the primer @pupwhipped mentioned (Benefit Porefessional). I will use this only on and next to my nose, and it really does make your pores disappear. At least for me it does! I apply a luminizing primer (currently using Burberry, but Missha BB Boomer is good and less expensive) to my cheeks, forehead and chin, and I really like the effect it gives me. If your skin is dry, a lighter cream/liquid product would be best, and only set where absolutely necessary with powder. I only powder under my eyes and straight down the center of my face, very lightly. HTH! And try to remember not to be too hard on yourself. That magnifying mirror will scare the ____ out of anyone! Smiley LOL

Re: Need Some Help with Foundation Please

@FUTURE  I haven't tried the Benefit or Burberry primers, will have to look them up.  My primer of choice is the Missha BB Boomer - have consistenly stayed with it for several repeat purchases.  I like that it has pearl powder and other good for your skin ingredients.  You can't beat the price either.

Re: Need Some Help with Foundation Please

@JeanLouiseFinch I agree! I purchased one during the last sale that I'll open once I'm finished with the Burberry. I like the Burberry, but not sure if I'll repurchase, as it's more expensive. The Missha really is beautiful. It makes skin look healthy and glowy without looking shiny/oily. I like the texture, too.

@vanity: My 57 year-old skin loves the new Lancome Teint Idole Foundation Stick. I wear very little foundation, so it's perfect for me. Can't feel a thing and yet a couple of tiny swipes, blended with a brush, covers anything I want it to, like redness or other discoloration. The stick will last forever because a tiny bit goes a long way.  Very different from other foundation sticks I've tried because it's not heavy at all and never leaves me shiny or with a yellow tone (like Bobbi Brown's stick), and it gives a matte finish, but allows my skin's natural "glow" to show through. Never, ever looks dry on my dry skin.  Plus, no fragrance or other ick that can cause irriration.  Best barely-there foundation I've ever found for my skin.

I second this. It is truly a wonderful new foundation (five stars from Beautypedia, too). It is so easy to blend and so natural looking -- not matte, not dew, just natural.

My other recommendation would to ditch the darn magnifying mirror. Never used one, never will.
