How do you dispose of old nail polish?  I hate to just throw it into the trash.

@bargainsgirl   I figure since it's in a glass bottle, I put it in the recycling bin.

@Shanus If there's polish in that bottle, I'd think it would contaminate a whole truckload of potential recycling products.

I have several bottles I intend to discard just before I move in a few months.Hadn't thought muh abput it,   I'm calling my waste management to find whether they're trash or recycle.

I've seen lots of articles about how mixing food-contaminated plastic, glass and paper in our recycle can ruin a whole truckload -  never saw anything about any beauty products.  I'd be willing to bet almost all of the "recycle" in my condo assocaition ends up in the landfill.  Way too many people ignore the rules even though property management emails the rules at least monthly.

@millieshops   I had no idea what else to do. Garbage guys don't take glass, can't spill polish down sink or toilet...figured just be concerned about the glass container...usually bottle is empty when tossed.

Google is your friend:

Your best bet is to bring it to your local Household Hazardous Waste facility (Google it to find the one closest to you). For example, here's a list of HHW facilities in Illinois, which are open for one-day collections on various Saturdays. You can also call the National Recycling Hotline at 1-800-CLEANUP (253-2687).

Polish bottles = trash item

They can't get that jar clean enough (polish like paint) to sell the container to recyclers.  Many items have been removed to recycle. b/c buyers of products can't make money any more.....still want cardboard - cans and some large bottles.

I had a pail of broken asphalt from snow plow damage to my driveway - trash hauler told me to just dump it in the regular trash container.

(surprised me)

Let's face it, no one is taking a bottle of nail polish to a hazardous waste facility.  LOL

Take the lid off and leave the polish sit until it's all dried out and solid.  Put the lid back on and toss it into the trash.  Once it's no longer in liquid form it's not considered a toxic/hazardous chemical anymore.

If you throw something into your recycling container that can't be recycled, nothing in that container can be recycled.  It's all contaminated and all goes to the dump.  They aren't going to pick and sift through the bin to pull out stuff that shouldn't be in there.

Of course not 1 bottle. But many households have many other things to bring in. In otherwords, save until you get enough. Makes sense.
