NEWBIE to BE Eye Shadow needs help!!!

OK, all of you PROFESSIONAL BE gals. I bought 2 eye shadows yesterday at Sephora. I was planning to use it wet but it didn't work so well. I just used my regular brush; should I be using one of those little "foam" applicators? It just seemed to kind of swirl around and never really "adhere" to the brush. I switched over to a dry brush and had luck, but I always have better luck with eye shadows staying in place when applying them wet. Plus they are more intense.

SUGGESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????
