I haven't used an eyelash curler since I was school age. That was over 50 years ago. I finally purchased a curler and tried it this morning. Absolutely nothing. The directions on my curler say to apply mascara first ~ but someone on the board a couple of weeks ago said not to do that. The curler I have has rubber only on the bottom portion. The directions sound as though there should be rubber on both parts. Help ! TIA

The eyelash curlers I've used only have rubber on the bottom.
I would never recommend applying mascara first- there is a great chance of pulling out some of your eyelashes doing this (even if/when the mascara is dry), at the mascara can get stuck to the curler and when you pull the curler away from your lashes, some of the lashes go with it!
Try curling for about 3-5 seconds at the base, then move up a little and curl there too. Or you can do it in three sections-base, middle, end- if your lashes are really long.
Some people like to use heated lash curlers or heat theirs up with a hairdryer first but I personally don't do that. The heated ones don't work for my lashes and heating up my eyelash curler first can cause my lashes to break/get weaker due to the heat (like always blow drying your hair- it can dry out your hair, same with lashes and heat).
Since my eyelashes have grown longer recently, I am having problems getting my lashes to stay curled so I use mascaras to help KEEP the curl. Not all mascaras can help keep the curl, even the ones that claim the curl the lashes, so you will have to experiment to see which ones work for you.
There are tons of online tutorials (you tube videos) that you can watch too. Hopefully someone can recommend a good one as I don't really watch them.
Good luck!

First you have to find the right curler for YOUR eye shape (all have just one rubber). They seem to all be different and price has nothing to do with it. I've tried them all and the best I ever found was at Big Lots for $2! When you use be sure and hold and count to 30. Another tip...use waterproof mascara or else there goes the curl. Regular mascara has water in it so it immediately takes the curl out that you just put in. Waterproof mascara doesn't do that. It locks the curl in and sets it. Good luck!

I use the Shumura (sp?) and I curl my lashes first and then apply mascara and have no problem.

I kind of thought the same thing and I am usually pretty impatient so I'd be afraid I'd pull out lashes. BUT, he sure is a cutie!
That is the first time I've watched a video by him, although I've heard alot about him on these forums.
