@teganslaw wrote:Some dermatologists say to wear sunscreen 24-7, even when staying indoors. I don't buy that; it's overkill IMO.
I don't wear actual suncreen, instead wear moisturizer with SPF 50. Some sunscreens contain ingredients that are harmful, so I can't trust on using the right ones. I know what my moisturizer contains, and since I don't spend much time in the sun I'm OK with what I use.
@teganslaw You have to check the ingredients of moisturizers with SPF very carefully. Most are more sunscreen (top ingredients), than moisturizers. They're often using chemical protectors, too, if that's what you're trying to avoid.
Unfortunately, some of the natural products can be more tacky, occlusive and pore clogging, at least for me, with a history of cystic acne, just begging to return if I dare clog those pores.
I'm speaking for myself. My situation is a little challenged. But, although I use it, I hate sunscreen of any kind.

I use a Japanese sunscreen which contains a blend of various chemical sunscreens different from the ones made here. I like it very much. I just cannot use mineral sunscreens b/c they make me look ghostly...I've tried many but they all do that and no one is going to convince me otherwise. So be it.
I don't always wear sunscreen when I go outside. What I do is check the UV index to see what it is at any given time during the day. Early mornings and late afternoons have the lowest UV indexes as well as during very overcast days.

I've heard James Welsh talk about Korean brand sunscreens and how much better they are. I know he said why he thought that but I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the topic, just to him

I never liked chemical sunscreens because they reacted on my light colored clothing, turned white shorts, pants etc. orange on the edges and hems. I only have used mineral sunscreen for many years now. My khaki, whites and lights are orange free!

That's true. No more chemical sunscreens on our store shelfs now. And I doubt it will be able to be ordered on line and shipped here either.
Of course the tourists can still smuggle it in in their luggage.

@Seannie Are all the makeups that contain sunscreens also banned?

Sorry, Mindy D, just noticed your question today. My suspicion is that if you put on makeup or mosturizer on in your hotel room, no one will be the wiser.
Honestly, I think the only way the sunscreen ban can be enforced is if you are on the beach spraying on your Coppertone or similar spray that has chemicals. I will check in Longs Drugs when I get to Maui next month to see if makeup with SPF is on the shelves.
I will add, I am packing zinc oxide MD Solar Sciences in my checked luggage. I have no idea if airport personnel at OGG would check to see what tourists are bringing in.
By the way, I follow your recalls and Thank You Very Much for them!

For those who are curious, I found an explanation on the chemical sunscreen ban in Maui. It's about damage to the coral reefs. Here's the link:

@laluzdelmundo And to think with all the ado, a large percentage of beach goers (like me) will never go near the water.
