Yes---it gets dumped after 3 months--I smell mine too-- if it goes near your eyes why in the world would you use it---all it takes is one nasty eye infection---to learn a lesson. I do the same thing with all my make up--out it goes after the suggested expiration time. Have gotten new, still in the package make up that has smelled awful too. Not a pleasant smell.

I heard a makeup artist say that if you open the tube and you smell an odor then discard it. Some mascaras don't keep as well as others. Three months seems to be the rule but it all depends on the ingrediants.

I use mine until it dries out.  Never have had a  problem.
