I have a pedicure every other week due to ingrowns and it's worth the money. I do my own manicure.
OP: LOVE those manicures. I would do them in a heartbeat IF I knew a salon they could them. I learned the hard way that not every manicurist can do nail art. I have not been to a salon yet (and my friends agree there salon is the same regarding this) that is happy for you to see one person for the manicure and then someone else in the salon to do the artwork. I've tried calling a salon and asking for the best person and am always told they ALL do great work.
No, they do not.
If you can find someone who does it well, GO FOR IT!!!!

@Snowpuppy I think the black would be perfect with the right outfit for New Year's Eve or some type of "black tie" event. Personally, I'm more inclined to try it with a darker, but not black polish...navy, burgandy. Or maybe a deep, bright color.
As far as getting the hang of it, lots and lots of practice. I'd far rather buy lots of pretty colors than spend money to have someone do my mani for me. Plus I rather like doing while I watch tv. And frequently, like every couple of days.
Also, while my skills definitely have improved over the years, the biggest secret is learning how to clean up all the inevitable boo boos. Some polishes practically apply themselves, But others do not. "Floating" on the top coat corrects many of the imperfections on the nails and cleanup gets rid of any mess around the nails.

i am not a huge fan of the matte polishes, but i LOVE this look for a different french manicure.

I've been getting professional manis/pedis for 25 years. It's just a part of my beauty routine. This is my vacation manicure. We just spent two glorious weeks in the Virgin Islands.

I do my own because I don't care for the time investment. Also, I wear color and I'd rather stay with a mort traditional nail for balance.

What is this term exactly? I've never heard of it.

@fitfuninformed I rather like the definition I found on the google search page (I was having a hard time finding the right words):
"Black-tie formal wear: What it actually means. Black tie is a dress code for social functions that start after 6 p.m., and basically translates to “this party is fancy and men should wear tuxedos.”"

I am 65 and thought I was the only one who had never had a manicure. I don't polish them because the polish always chips within a few hours and if I do it a lot it weakens them.

I have natural nails and have done my own since I became a teen. Any time I had it done professionally, I always redid when I got home...perfectionist here.
On the OP mani, it's really easy to do. I did not do the black but wore th look in a deep burgundy last winter. Just polish a coat of matte top coat over any regular polish then use any regular shiny topcoat only on the tips. Super easy.
