@Shanuswrote:Here’s what I do not understand & was interested to read. Many women use the micellar water or wipes as an extra cleanser to remove eye makeup or leftover makeup before or after their other cleanser.
Is that not a sign that the cleanser used isn’t doing an adequate job of removing makeup and debris from skin?
Although we have discussed here second cleanses, etc., I can use only one. There’s no residue, eye makeup is gone w/o using a separate remover and I don’t use cleansing wipes first or after. I do, however just use Cetaphil in the morning or days I’m not wearing makeup.
To those who say you use the “water” after to get off the rest of your makeup, do you use a Clarisonic w/ your cleanser?
@Shanus- I don't understand the micellar water after cleansing to finish up the job either. I see your point about questioning the effectiveness of a cleanser if two steps are required. Is it really a requirement or a preference? I've heard before that makeup should be removed prior to cleansing so that's what I do. Some people follow the oil cleanse as being the first step in a two-part routine, followed by something foamy. My particular method is the micellar water as my first step (or if you want to call it the pre-cleanse), and then I follow with my cleansing oil as step two, my "real" cleansing step so to speak. This is only for PM. In the AM, I use a different cleanser and it's only one step. Personally, I don't think micellar water alone is proper cleansing yet some people like doing that. If you prefer a single step method and you're happy with your Cetaphil, hey, it's a free country.

I tried a handful of versions of micellar water when it first began to appear in American beauty brands. I started with Garnier and moved on to a couple of more expensive versions including La Roche-Posay. My feeling is they did not clean my face well enough alone, but worked well as a non alcohol toner. Vichy makes a decent micellar water (Purete Thermale), but a micellar they make which I love is one called Micellar Oil. Micellar Oil is an oil cleanser that removes every last flake of mascara and all makeup thoroughly. The product is water soluable, but I prefer to wipe off with a wet cloth. There is no oily residue, and on my oilier skin when I use it in the morning I can moisturize under my eyes and skip facial moisturizer and move on primer (and sunscreen in the daytime).

Not sure if this is a marketing gimmic but Dimitri has mentioned the importance of using an essence. It is to moisten the skin and then apply your skincare while the face is still damp. He claims better absorption of your skincare. Everytime I apply mine, I think am I crazy. Plain water may have the same affect. I won't pay a lot of money for an essence. Those more expensive brands certainly are no better than the less expensive. ones. Who knows maybe this is another one of those things where they have fooled us one more time into thinking we need it.

@Tricolor micellar water, Korean essences, and plain H2O are all different things and do different jobs. I don't like the Skinn Softening Essence at all, but I was very happy with another Korean essence I was using until it was discontinued. Besides helping products absorb better, essences also contain ingredients that benefit the skin more than just plain water. I do believe there's a difference among them and don't agree that expensive ones are no better than the less expensive. Granted, price itself doesn't determine how good something is but this is where the importance of label reading comes in. The more expensive ones usually have a higher concentration of the key ingredients.

@JeanLouiseFinch, thank you for the clarification. I do tend to spend more money on skincare because I do believe that they have a higher concentration of better ingredients. Just did not realize that's also true for an essence. I do respect your knowledge of skincare.

@Boehm Collectorwrote:@Shanus and @MrsCat21 ... I use the Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water. I do like it for removing makeup but follow with a facial cleanser It costs about $9.00 at CVS...even less on Amazon. Much cheaper than the one sold on QVC.
@Boehm Collector. Can you explain, hopefully, its purpose if you are following with a facial cleanser anyway?
I"m not Boehm Collector, but Micellar Waters remove makeup. I do that as a first step then use a cleanser.

@OKPrincesswrote:I picked up Philosophy cleanser at Ulta about month ago and the package included micellar water. I wanted to try it. I don’t know or feel the benefits so I’ll use it up and not purchase anymore.
@OKPrincess This just be another attempt for this industry to take our money...make us think a product is necessary.
Not necessarily. Micellar waters are good at removing foundation, etc. Cleansers usually do not cut through foundations. One uses one before the foaming cleansers. IMO

@winamac1 My night time cleanser has always cut through my foundations, IT CC foundation (which is really heavy), waterproof liner and most importantly SPF which is the most difficult to remove.
No one in this country knew about the Korean masks until they appeared in the USA. Now they’re advertised everywhere as a must have part of our skincare. What will be next?
Those finding micellar water or wipes effective are certainly entitled to their opinion. IMO, every item that appears as new in a skincare line, does not mean it’s better than what you’ve been using. If you were satisfied w/ your cleanser before, is another really necessary?
