I wash my brushes every time I use them. That way, each one is clean and ready to go the next time I need one. I just use liquid soap or facial cleanser (if it gets makeup off my face, it will get makeup out of my brushes).
I've had the same brushes for several years so getting them wet or washing daily doesn't seem to hurt them.

@molly and me   I keep a paper towel under my makeup mirror and use a temporary spray on brushes used in cream products. IT mnakes one called BRUSH LOVE and others may be found in different lines...high end and drugstores.

 

Once a week, I use Purity (since it iritates my face/eyes) to clean my brushes. It may take several dips in water and back in the Puirty to remove cream/foundation makeup.
