Are the MAC eyeshadows really as great as the hype in the presentations?  Colors look so satiny and pretty, but just wondering if they are heads above other brands to justify the cost?

I think they are good, but certainly not better than many other brands.

@just wonder , I have alot Mac eye shadows.  I think they are very good.  They last, don't flake or crease.  I use mine with a Mac brush dipped in water, then blotted on on a tissue.  I had a Mac make up artist do my eyes, and this is what he showed me step by step. The pigments are also very good, so a little goes a long way.  Mine last forever.   I have recently purchased Laura Gellers eye shadow palette and I'm very impressed with that also. Good pigments, and really don't need to wet the brush unless I want stronger color.

Know that I'll be in the minority but I didn't like the MAC palettes that I had so have donated them.  The colors were so-so and just didn't like how they looked on me.  They seemed very powdery to me and the palettes ended up messy which I didn't like.  Anyway, felt I had other palettes that I liked better, they weren't being used, so donated them.

@just wonder  - You can return them if you're not happy.  The Q has the extended return now thru the end of January.

Comparable to Lancome or Clinique and other prestige department store brands

@just wonder I have loved Mac eye shadows since the day that I first discovered them at Macy's back in 199something. I would haunt that counter to see the new things coming out.

And, they had great new things coming out frequently.

Then they got carried aways & started realeasing thing constantly. Like every other week & I noticed that I was disappointed with a lot of the LE things. Especially palettes.

So most of my eye shadows are Mac & I love them. I have palettes of the Pro Pans. I have some of the X9 small palettes & I have the Art Library Palette. I have several of the older palettes that they released in collections & they are so beautiful.

But. so many companies have entered the market that you now have so much to choose from!

So yes I love Mac eye shadows, & I own more than I will count for you, but I don't love every Mac eye shadow. I will always try most any eye shadow they put out if I can.

No they aren't heads above other brands. There are amazing shadows in sooo many brands now.

I think MAC eyeshadows are excellent, but I feel the same about Lancome, Laura Mercier, Urban Decay, Bobbi Brown, and several other prestige brands.  You can step down in price point with Morphe and NYX and get some pretty good eyeshadows too.  For the price Morphe really offers good pigment that lays down without a lot of work trying to get the color on and the shadows wear well.  You have to work a little harder with NYX shadows, but if price is an issue the extra effort to apply the shadows isn't awful.

@JudyL   I like the MAC matte or shimmer shadows, but I find the more metallic shades, to be used as topper shades, have a lot of fallout.

@Dazlin   When wanting to wet my brush for shadow application, I use setting spray. It helps the shadows last longer.
