I have always considered the leave in and the sc are doing separate things for my hair, so I've never mixed them. The leave in is to make sure there's moisture back in your mid-shaft and ends and smooth the cuticle down and it soaks in. The styling crème is a heat protectant and styling product and so isn't made to soak into your hair as much. Maybe that's why you're getting a weird texture, but that's just a guess. Use both, just use them separately.
