Re: LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER IF.....

@Swedishmiss  Even plastic surgery can only tighten/lift the face. It will not remove wrinkles or sun spots. that's why skincare is so important. Some surgeons will put a patient on a 6 month, fairly strong regimine so her skin is in good shape and she won't be disappointed with her facelift results.

Re: LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER IF.....

[ Edited ]

I had no specific skincare lines in mind when I came up with "10 years younger". I have seen and heard many lines promise lifting, more youthful looking skin after 30 days, less wrinkles, etc. It's a "catch phrase" to lure women into purchasing products.

If you're aware of the hype in ads on TV or in print, you'll see many before and after photos that look photo shopped or I see no difference at all or results that could never be from using skincare.

The lists of ingredients are baffeling. I have to look them up to see what they are and what they are supposed to do...many are just added oils or "extras" and many times water is the first ingredient.

I tend to not trust cosmetic lines who crossover into skincare. Besides ususally being heavily scented, their prices are quite high while the active ingredients are questionable. An example of this is Lancome and even Bobbi Brown. Skincare is such a big money maker that it can bring in much more than makeup. I don't see  skincare in the MAC line or Makeup Forever...both professional lines. They don't need it.

Estee Lauder, on the other hand, has made millions on one little night time repair oil. It's nothing special, IMHO. Any good oil will do the same thing, but they charge $75 for 1 oz. of product that promises "to reduce the multiple signs of aging....caused by environmental assaults of modern life. Eight hours of antioxidant power and 72 hours of hydration leaving the skin radiant, plumped.....".  It's referred to as a "super serum". The description I'm quoting goes on to say, "88% of women said skin looked more youthful in three weeks". After my trial, a 1 oz. bottle, used nightly, lasted 2 1/2 weeks. That's the rub. You're already "in" for for $150 to see the promised results in 3 wks. Yes, the first ingredient is water and you'd have to be a cosmetic scientist to pronounce or know what the other components are and actually do. The ones that are recognizable are yeast extract, camomile, caffeine, jojoba wax, some seed extracts, squaline & gylerin (1/2 way way down the list), etc.

The only point of this thread is to help women be aware of false promises and prices for skincare that are over priced for the effectiveness. Even if the company is well known, please do your homework. Look for honest reviews, check with your derm or a medi spa.

There's a 'trick" I've learned over the years. Look at expensive medical grade skincare like Skinmedica, Skinsceuticals, Neocutis...check what active ingredients they have and look for those in less expensive lines. Paula's Choice, for example, has some excellent buys, especially during sales. The Obagi line has frequent discounts online and at the derm offices...everything from cleansers to toners to moisturizers to skin lighteners (w/o hydroquinone) to spf and the Vit. C serum ($76) I now use when Skinceuticals shot up to a crazy $166.

There are drugstore products with wonderful actives...L'Oreal and Oil of Olay both have amped up their offerings with retinols, etc.

If you already look 10 years younger, than great for you..genes, diet, exercise, spf, great skincare for many years, whatever. Those trying to achieve this with skincare alone, buyer beware.  Many times something as simple as Aquafor under the eyes or on the lips can work just as well as any $80 eye cream.

Apologies for this long post.

Re: LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER IF.....

I liked your post @Shanus and agreed with all you said.  I also was interested in some of these tips I hadn't heard of before.  I recently bought some aquaphor. It does wonders under my eyes so I'm dropping my former eye cream and saving some dollars.  Thank's for your post. Most of us know where your heart is and appreciate the time you give here to inform and help us.  Have a great day!

Thank you @jubilant . One poster has a tough time with me no matter what forum I  post. It's tough to let it go. I'm happy you enjoy my threads/posts and get a little info here and there. Aquafor is great...not so wonderful if you try to use it under concealer, but great at night...even better over your eye cream. It tends to seal it in. Have a safe and wonderful weekend and Happy Holidays.

Wouldn't it be great if we all bought product promising to make us look 10 years OLDER because looking older is associated with being smarter, more confident, and secksy. I think that makes much more sense!

@Goldengate8361     I'm "extra-short" and actually HAD to do that.....

@Desertdi   I've always been kinda tiny, younger looking for my age because of that, too. I have little step stools in every closet or corner of rooms where I have to reach things on a daily basis.

I was in the hospital three years ago. Trust me, I had no m/u, hair hadn't been washed in more than a week and I was wearing a Johnie.

One of the fellows was sent to interview me re a possible new problem. She kept saying,"I can't believe you're seventy three. When her team came in she remarked I was charming.

Being alert, talking in an intelligent way with some humor was all she had to go on.

I do use Retina micro, a moisturiser and sunscreen. I color my hair because my grey is an ugly steel color. If I had my late mother's gorgeous white silver hair I wouldn't bother.

Good idea about taking care of the hands.

@lavendar  I'll disagree about the grey hair, but mine turned out to be the silver/white you mentioned. Please no discussions about grey hair. I will say that kepping your mind active, good posture and a younger demeanor (not sure how else to describe it...maybe a spring in your step), can give a more youthful appearqance. Hey, what's a Johnie?

@SeaMaiden   It seems, as we age, everything looses volume except our bu*ts. LOL

Agreed! Nothing short of a face lift is going to make me look 10 years younger. Gravity takes over.......

@Effie54  I tell clients who are planning to have facial surgery, wrinkles will still be there afterwards. When I worked with a plastic surgeon, my job included  preparing an intensive 6 month pre-surgery program to get skin in the best possible shape for optimal post surgery results. Sometimes after (or during surgery) fillers or Botox were  also used which has to be continued. Now they use fat transfer. You get a litle lipo and they use that fat to inject areas in the face that needs volume.

Re: LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER IF.....

Something I've neglected to mention for deep wrinkles/sun damage/spots is a deep chemical peel and/or lasers. Both may require downtime. I've done some lighter, less invasive peels on myself at home. The more invasive ones may require minor sedation, lots of numbing cream and a high threshhold for pain.
