Re: Kinda gross: did anyone ever lose a toenail? Care to share your experience?

I didn't lose one, but I did have one REMOVED...my big toenail...because of (ugghhh) toenail fungus (accompanied by swelling and tenderness)!!! The doctor did not remove the root, so it did grow back in, but it took a VERY long time...well over a year (probably like 14 months or so) to completely get to the end of the toenail. Unfortunately, mine grew in very thick...almost like the fungus was still there. It has now been almost two years, and I am just now seeing a smoother nail at the very base. I hope you have better luck than I did...maybe yours will grow back in smoothly and quickly!!

I slammed my big toe into a steel table, and the nail died. I kept a bandaid on it during the summer months until it grew enough to put polish on.

Well, he was right, they kept falling off at the slightest bump. I get pedicures every two weeks and she did the gel nails until my nails grew back, seemed like about 6 months and then removed them...the nails came back healthy and strong....I don't think it is a good idea to paint your nail bed.

I read that it is fine to paint the nail bed. I would be afraid of gel or adhesive because I would worry that it could injure/pull off the nail bed.

It can take a big toenail 6 months to a year to grow back. Unfortunately toenails grow slowly.

If you are worried about wearing sandals, you can have a fake one put on. You can also polish the toe bed without any problems.

At least that's one less toenail to trim until it grows back.

Is the fake nail put on in a regular nail salon? Do they have them in stock?

I lost the nail a few weeks ago. It will probably take 3 months or so until it looks semi normal again.

I never had the ridge before so I hope it grows all the way out. I painted what is there for the time being as I cannot stand to look at it!

I was in elementary school when I banged my foot into a metal insert in the ground. 45+ years later I still remember clearly how much it hurt and so ugly it was. Not once since have I not immediately looked at my feet when I hit something hard.

I hope it grows back quickly for you. Slap a band aid on it and wear your fav. sandals. It will be fine.
