I give M.A.C. richly deserved credit for the array of colors they offer.  They don't leave anyone out regardless of skin coloring or undertone.  Even with something as simple as taupe, M.A.C. will have one which looks best on you based on your color.  As for quality, Kat Von D is better.  That said, I can name a few brands which are much better than Kat's, but since the OP asked about Kat compared to M.A.C. I'll confine my answer to those two brands.
