It is bad when big commercial companies buy out small private ones like Beekmans or Josie Maran. Everything changes. I quit Beekmans because their whole line changed for the worse.

Hi @fluocinonide   Woman Happy

Y'know.  Off the top of my head, I cant think of even one small Beauty line that was made better having been gobbled up by a larger company.

Re: Josie Maran leaving QVC?

I loved that concealer too @Mimi NY. Very moisturizing for my dry skin.  Will miss it.

@fluocinonide  Wondering why you wrote about big companies buying out small ones.  I looked online and saw Forbes wrote in February (relaunch), that she has been and continues to be the owner and makes all the decisions.  She says the relaunch is to increase sustainability (refillable containers).  She does seem to have some relationship with Sephora, which gives them some exclusivity, which is probably why we haven’t seen much of the re-packaged products on QVC.

But, more important to me, the article mentions in passing that she has new sourcing for the oil and that it is "more lightweight".

When I noticed that Josie's oil had disappeared from the QVC website and was being “relaunched”, I searched to look if there was a problem with the fruit harvest. I found that during the pandemic lockdown, the women's cooperatives that produced the oil and that Josie spoke much about, shut down, and big business took control of the collection of the fruit from the argan trees, so there was no fruit for the cooperatives to collect and produce the oil when the lockdown ended.  So now argan oil production is controlled by big business because they control the harvesting, and they use the women's cooperatives for only one step in the production process, and the rest is handled by differently.  So I would guess these businesses are the new source mentioned in the Forbes article, and their production processes have changed the nature of the product making it "more lightweight".  Wondering whether the new production processes are better for the environment, or otherwise impact sustainability.  From what I read, the fruit is now being collected too early and the trees are barren.

Very disappointed about this.  I had hoped the report about harvesting was overstated, but reading the Forbes article today, not so sure.  I have tried other cheaper argan oils, and I could tell the difference in the quality from Josie's, which has been a much richer product.  So that is changing.

Very disappointed.

@Effie54  copying you because you reacted to my post  in a previous thread that the "original" oil had not changed, just repackaged.  Not sure I was correct, I was relying on the packaging referring to the product as "original" but now not sure how the word is used, considering the "new sourcing" I just read and wrote about.

She rebranded over the last year, so things will be discontinued, I imagine.

YEP - IT WAS GROSS, UNPROFESSIONAL, NOT READY FOR ANYONE TO BE IN THE ROOM - NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY AND NOT THE FIRST TIME SHE HAS DONE THAT - SHE DOES NOT HOLD TO A PROFESSIONAL DECORUM AT TIMES AND IS NOT OK FOR QVC TV - IT'S EASY NOT TO TALK LIKE THAT WHILE MAKING TOO MANY MILLIONS PER MINUTE  -- AND FOR ANYONE WANTING TO TELL US - NOT TO COMMENT ON THIS - KEEP IT TO YOURSELF - THIS IS SOMETHING THAT MATTERS TO MORE PEOPLE THAN WHO FIND A WAY TO COMMENT HERE - AND IS A LEGITIMATE COMMENT - NO NEED TO 'PROTECT' OR KISS UP FOR HER BENEFIT.

Fabulous thoughtful investigation, thanks for your work. You have a scientific approach, that is also practical.

NOW: WHAT DO WE [consumers] DO?

Seems clear the argon source, bought out and now run by a Big Business, will affect the quality of what oil Josie can bring.

Packaging changed because the product changed.

I assume you found the original oil is no longer available from Josie (just checked my cupboard and have one large bottle left)?

Re: Josie Maran leaving QVC?

@1Professor

I am saddened for the loss for the women.  I haven't watched a presentation of the argan products to be sure, but no representation is being made in the website regarding her reliance on the co-ops.

The pandemic was a horror with lasting effects in so many ways.

Mechanized production can change the product, and she is saying it is more lightweight, so maybe it has lost nutrients.  Some people did complain that the oil was too heavy, so maybe they will be happy.  But I like it the way it was.  I apply it to my face every night.  My face drinks it up, not greasy for me.

I think the old oil is only available from secondary sources.  I will not buy.   Oil does go rancid, bottles may have been refilled.

For future purchases, I will look for cold pressed argan oil elsewhere.

Re: Josie Maran leaving QVC?

I didn’t realize Beekman was bought out as well. They had a very small section in my Ulta, then I found about six items that were at the bottom of a shelf not anywhere near the “prestige” brands. I don’t use their products but I did notice the location by chance.
