@JustJazzmom, I have often made this remark when purchasing beauty products, especially skincare. Some companies do a great job with this, but they are few and far between.
There is a huge omission as far as makeup goes. All we are left with are some rules of thumb or guidelines from third party sources, such as Beautypedia. But even these are not much help unless one knows when the item was freshly made.
With respect to Mally's mascaras, I have always had trouble with them "gooping" way too much, whether fresh or not. Not a fan of her mascara at all.
The Juice Beauty Cleansing Milk that I use has an expiration date on it. And what's especially cool is that if I call the online store where I usually buy it (lovelyskin.com), they'll actually go and check the current date for me. Other than that, I can't think of any skin care off the top of my head that puts an expiration date on the container.
Paula's choice products put the expiration dates on the containers, at least the tubes do.

What I do lately is take some masking tape and write in pen on it and put it on the mascara or primer for the lashes and write the date I opened it and put it into use. Most times that is the same date.

The only expiration dates I've ever seen on PC products are on their sunscreens. None of my other products have anything but the little jar with the open lid and the number of months in it (suggesting how long you can use it after opening).
In fact, just yesterday I called because I had two backups I had forgotten to label and wanted to know which one was the older. I gave the rep the batch code.

With skincare, I usually use a Sharpie and write when I received it and then when I opened it.

What I do when my mascaras get a little dry: I let 1 or drops of water go into the container, then close it. By the next day, the mascara is not dry.

I'd worry about bacteria issues doing that . I know some add a drop or so of argan (or other) oil.

I would be a bit concerned about doing that especially with plain tap water because of bacteria concerns and eyes. Generally, I am not one to be concerned about throwing opened products away. I keep eye shadows for years.

If you didn't want to use tap water, you could use a drop or two of a sterilizing solution for contact lenses. Just a thought.

If the mascara is getting goopy, does that mean that the Mally mascara should be shook up before using?? I do like the idea of using sterile contact lens solution to add to the mascara tube.
ETA: what about using those saline solutions for the eyes like Natural Tears? Or even Ayr which is a saline solution for noses?
