Irritation from the Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA

Bought the recent PC TSV and began using it about a week or so ago.

After a few applications of the 2% BHA liquid, I noticed a tingling.  Then, last night, after applying it, my face turned bright red and really burned.

I immediately washed everything off, and will not be using it again.   It's too late to return.

Has anyone else had an adverse reaction to this product?

I've sent a query through her website, but haven't heard back.

Yes, I reacted and just threw it away. I don't blame Paula because I always have reacted to anti aging products...even ones that seem to be OK for awhile. Then the redness, peeling and irritation begin. Her's was no different. I envy women that can use these products on the quest to maintain their skin. Everything I use now is for sensitive skin and it probably just adds moisture and little else.

This has happened to me.  At first I thought I really liked it, but after using it four times I began to get the tingling and one day I noticed I had a raw feeling to my skin.

I stopped using it and now I'm back to normal.  I'm sticking to my Philosophy products.

This is just my experience....I know each person has different skin types.  I'm sure it works great for others.

OP, even though they are usually prompt in returning messages, it's really just easier to call. They are very accommodating.

I don't have a problem with the BHA stuff, but I used the retinol cream for 3-4 nights in a row at first and it dried me out horribly.  I had to stop using it to get my skin back to normal.    I am now using it every 3rd night and it seems to be doing better.   I also wish I could use it every night like she said we should!

Hello Witchy Woman,

I started using the Paula's Choice TSV about 3 weeks ago. The first few times I had no problems. Then, I had redness, swelling and some burning. I have extremely sensitive skin. I waited to try it again for three days. Then I only lightly and very gently applied the BHA, then let it dry. Then applied the PC serum and moisturizer. I cannot use it near my eyes though. I do not use it during the day at all, as I think twice a day is too much for my skin.  I have found that it works well, my skin is smoother and seems brighter. This is the first time I have been able to use any type of retinol product, so I am happy.  I did read that if you have sensitivity, you should start slowly and not apply it every day until your skin adjusts to it.

This is my solution to the irritation, not saying it would work for anyone else.

My skin is sensitive and dry and after using it once a day (@night) for 3 days, I experienced the same thing, especially in tender areas, around my eyes, nose & mouth.

I haven't given up yet though, I'm giving my skin a couple of days with only argan & rose hip oil and will try the PC every other night and see if that helps.

I can't use it either. It makes my face sting & red with dry patches. I very lightly wiped it across my face. It says to use it 1-2 x per day. If I did that my face would be so red & dry. I might get away with using it once per wk if I rinse after a few mins & apply some moisturizer. I now use it for spot treatment on any breakouts I get.

Re: Irritation from the Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA

Not from the 2% BHA, but I get reactions like that to many other products. I'm sorry you had that reaction. I know how awful it can be.

With any exfoliant, I start out using it just a few times a week, then every other day, then once a day to see how my skin responds. The 2% BHA is one I can use daily (after the initial build up to daily), but my skin does really well with salicylic acid. Exfolikate and the Tatcha rice powder were awful for me and I had reactions that lasted a few weeks.

Hopefully your skin recovers quickly. I recommend cutting back on your skincare and makeup until you heal more quickly. I strip my skincare to the basics - cleanse, moisturize, SPF. I don't do any exfoliation or treatments until my skin resets. My skin often gets dry and peeling patches when I have a reaction, so if I get dry flaky patches, I only use a gentle washcloth to exfoliate and nothing else.
