If you have highlights do you need to use a shampoo/conditioner especially for color treated hair?

I have been getting highlights for 13 years now and I have not used shampoo and conditioner especially for color treated hair. I would like to know if those of you who color your hair do you use them and if not do you think you don't need it? I wonder if the formulas really help prevent losing color.

For those of you who recommend them please recommend a drugstore brand. I was thinking of trying L'Oreal's new brand.Thanks.

Hi dperry, my hair is highlighted and I have always used shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair. I'm not sure if it's because of my hair, or do to the shampoo/conditioner, but I only need to get the highlights done once a year. They last so long on me.

My Sister colors her hair and used John Frieda shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair and says she doesn't have to color as often as the color doesn't fade. Plus its not real expensive and most drug stores and grocery chains carry it.

I get highlights a few times a year. I recommend using a sulfate free shampoo. I also use a UV protector spritz as a leave in.

A second for John Frieda. Inexpensive and works well.

My experience is that the champagne blonde in his line (white in the tube) can make blonde look almost white so use with caution because it can also make gray hair stand out.

I'm currently using the Brunette in his line. I get both hi/low lites. Nice change up for winter!

I've used Redken for color treated hair in the colored bottles........not real happy. More hype than results for big $.

I use WEN, but before that, I used Nexus for split ends with good results---also LOVE the Suave with Moroccan oil...gold bottle.

Yes, you need shampoo/conditioner for color-treated hair.

I used to NOT use a special shampoo/conditioner after highlighting and didn't think much of it. However, once I made the switch, I noticed a difference in the color of my hair.

Yes. I'm a blonde and we're on a well. Thus, I have to use the ION shampoo for well water users, followed by John Frieda Blonde Enhancing shampoo and conditioner.

Ion Hard Water Shampoo Liter

Then I use ION mineral remover treatment every 7 days to remove the iron buildup, too.

Ion Crystal Clarifying Treatment

Thank you all very much for this information. I will start using the special shampoo and conditioners for colored hair. Again thank you.

I have fine, oily highlighted hair and have always used volumeizing shampoos, not ones for colored hair. Works ok for me!
