If this is wrong, I don't want to be right. LOL

Sandra and the TooFaced rep just said, "Mascara should be changed out every 3 months"

Ok.  that is ridiculous IMO.  It used to be 6 months, I didn't follow that either.  Now they are saying half that.  I call BS.  That is just to make us buy more.

If you're sanitary with your products, don't share with others, don't have an eye infection, and the product has not changed in scent or consistency, you are fine to keep using a mascara past 3 months or longer.  I know I have mascaras that are older and they are fine.

@justashopper    That's what I've many times heard that manufacturers recommend.  Of course they want to sell their product.  Mascara is most likely of all cosmetics to be contaminated by bacteria and possibly transfer infection to the eye.

@justashopper  I beg to differ. I go back a long time and for as long as I was involved with the industry and as a consumer of cosmetics, the standard rule for mascara was to toss it after three months of use.  Of course, some people may be able to stretch the three months especially if they use more than one mascara (possible if you go in for different finishes on your lashes).

Your mascara wand could easily pick up bacteria from your lashes which serve to filter and protect from anything that might enter the eye.  You don't know what might be on them.

I've always heard 3 months, then toss it.

@Beauties

I think the reason why I began running the closed mascara tube under running hot water, was to liquify the last bit in a tube that I loved, at one time.

   Turns out, this kind of "liquifying" makes any/most mascara product (I've used)  much nicer to apply, even if a new tube.  Perhaps as such, it uses mascara up faster??  vs new "clumpy?

I wear mascara every day.  I go through a tube at least every three months.

I've always heard every 3 months also because of the chance of infection.

@justashopper @This is totally correct. The tube of mascara is a breeding ground for bacteria and to avoid conjunctivitis you should not keep it very long once opened. You could probably get away with a little while longer, but, for safety's sake, there's a short time to use it. This is why I only buy the mascaras I use in travel size.

I have only one set of eyes. Not going to risk it. I follow safety recommendations when it comes to cosmetics and anything else I eat or drink.
