I'm 68 and have been lightening my hair (myself) blonde since I was in my early 20's. I wear it long and straight, and my natural color is light brown (I think). I don't like seeing roots, so I've always done mine every 4 weeks. I'm due for my next color this Sunday, so I can now see my roots, and they are still mostly light brown with a few greys toward my face and temples, so I don't think I'll stop lightening anytime soon!

@StylishLady You definitely have to decide when and if you're ready to make the commitment. I will say there will always be some one's party, a big dinner, a wedding coming up....There is never a great time. It's a process and a stylist/color specialists can help you through it as painlessly as possible.

My personal opinion? Hair is like everything else - the most important thing to know is your own hair - its color, its texture, its thickness, its habits.
Some gray or white heads are lovely, some just aren't and just as the wrong dyed color is aging, so is natural in some circumstances.
.If I had hair like either of my sisters, I'd go natural. But my natural is just not pretty just as not all nature is good. So, as long as I can, I will color, but the color itself changes with my advancing age.

I did the same thing 2 years ago. I had long hair and I got to a point where I didn't have time anymore to do anything with my hair so i was putting it in a ponytail more than anything else. I was just sick of it.
And I had to color my hair every 6 weeks. It grew so fast and ALL my roots were gray. It made a statement when my toots were showing, and not a good statement.
So I decided to not only allow it all to gray but I cut t off, SHORT.
I get so many compliments on the shine and color and so many people ask who I go to to get my hair done because the coloring is beautiful. LOL
All I can do is laugh and tell them its all natural.
Good for you. I went the way of a very short cut (2" all over), too. All my bleached hair (dark to white) is gone now and after 2 short haircuts, it's all my own white hair.
It is a process and easier with short hair. I decided it would be more gradual to start the process with short layered hair. It worked. After about three cuts i had to ask my stylist Is that All Me? I am used to seeing me in the mirror but not as much in pictures. I still think about putting something in it. But i have gotten compliments on my look. I love not dealing with the monthly touchups etc.

Me too at 80 it is just starting this summer.
I am a natural blonde, now it has begun to be a sort of "dishwater" blonde( as it used to be called) and I think I see lots of white in my bangs.
This is fun for me,although sometimes I miss the blonde hair.I wear my hair long ,with bangs ,so not sure if I like long grey hair,I may have to cut it..........

Go for it, ladies! My hair came in tones of grey (and curly!) following chemotherapy, and I would never go back to coloring it. I too get so many compliments -- recently, a male tech in a nail salon asked if that was my own hair because it looked so perfect!
No more salon dye costs, no more damage. I just use a scunching gel in the mornings and don't bother to use a hair dryer. Love the freedom, as others have said.

You're so lucky the grey didn't show up until you were 80. Most of us are grey 20-30 yrs. before that.

First things first. Are you doing OK after chemo? Secondly, I have heard from a lot of women that their hair does come back differently after chemo, etc. Your hair will definitely be in better shape w/o dye.

My hair is long past my bra strap on my back and I haven't colored my hair in about 8 months or more. When I first was growing it out I would use temporary color to cover the grow out. It'lol probably take forever for mine to be completely grey but because my color was a blondish color it doesn't look bad. Another to hide the greys is headbands and bandanas used as headbands you can make those wider to cover more. I was horrible about getting my hair touched up so I decided why not quit altogether,
