I am curious, does anyone here have Vitiligo?

If you do, how do you treat it and how do you cover it?

I have it and it is terrible. I use a moistening cream with sp15 and a darker shade of make up on my face as it is white and brown spots. This is recently diagnosed and I will be interested in the replies from others with this terrible aliment.

My friend has it. She uses Sally Hansen's airbrush tan spray to cover and likes it. She also uses cover FX and Dermablend makeup. There are some new treatments that she is pursuing. I think a laser treatment has just been introduced. She has lived with it for years and has quite a bad case, but it has not let her affect her life. Sun apparently exacerbates it.

Sun is an enemy of this disorder. In the summer I use a strong sun block. Mine is worse on my arms. It is rare I am told.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease and if you have vitiligo, odds are you have other autoimmune issues as well.

I have been lucky (knock on wood) so far, it started on my armpits and goes around to my back slightly and then down in big sections of my trunk. The corners of my lips are white and really shows up when I get tan. Nothing so far on my face, just the lips and I hope it stays that way but truly, I know it's coming.

The armpits, the skin is silky soft and the hair is totally white and fine.

My mom had it, she had it so bad that she only had splotches of brown here and there. When I was a kid i used to say she looked like a cow. What kids would say..geeze.

But in answer to your question I would just use a full coverage makeup, Lancome has a good one with full coverage. Me, I would not use anything pharmacutical on my face, being autoimmune, chemicals aren't a good thing to seep into your body.

When I was diagnosed years ago there was a product called Benoquin that bleached the skin and I used it on my face. Unfortunately the company making the product felt that it wasn't cost effective. The other bad part is that you must use the product to keep the dark spots at bay. So I have a pale face with dark spots. 4% hydroquinone works but not that well. No OTC products work to lighten the spots since they are technically melanin which is your natural skin tone. You can go with darker make-up or lighter, nothing really covers the spots. Sometimes an eye primer, powder, concealer, then powder again will somewhat cover the spots. I have found that the sun is my enemy and even driving can darken the spots. I use a SPF 50 or higher on my face and neck. I wear 3/4 sleeves or longer. The rest of my skin is slowly (very slowly) lightening. I have had it at least 12 years now. Also I have found that those light bulbs that reserve energy and fluorescent lightening darken the spots. That may just be me but I avoid them like the sun. If you have a doctor you see find out if there is a product that replaced benoquin. I currently have no health insurance and the derm I called would not give me advise (the one who diagnosed me). Good luck!!!

I tell my boyfriend that he can play connect the dots on me. Anything to lighten up a crummy situation. I've heard if you have it you can have thyroid issues. I have a low thyroid. I think mine came from my dad's side because they had weird freckling on their neck and face. More than a normal freckle, more like patches of light and dark.

Covermark is a waterproof makeup, similar to Dermablend, that was created for coverage of skin conditions. ColorTration is another one. They have a web site.

Sadly my son has it. He started showing white areas around his eyes in middle school. He is now a senior in high school and has many large patches of pure white hair with gray strands also mixed throughout his remaining dark hair.

It's very depressing and idiots comment all the time. I'm so afraid of how much it will progress. Luckily he has lots of friends, but I worry about what will happen when he heads to college in a few months.
