When I colored my hair, I used ammonia and non ammonia color and the roots grew in at the same time so I stopped using ammonia color and it actually saved my hair from dryness.  Then I started coloring my own hair and used Natural Instincts and in my early 50's it grew out in about one month.  I no longer color my hair and have salt & pepper.  At least today you have a variety of root cover ups to choose from.

I don't have much gray, but since my hair is red and fades, I color it every 5 weeks.
