How Do Makeup Setting Sprays Work??

These products fascinate me...I've seen sprays by Urban Decay, Kat Von D and others, and even heard some ladies here describe using Wen replenishing mist to set their makeup. I've never tried any of them, because my skin is oily and it seems counter-intuitive! Anyone a fan - or not so much? Either way, can you explain how they work? :-)
