Holiday Tipping At The Salon

I could use some advice. I'm taking my elderly mother to get her hair cut, colored, and blown out in late November.  It costs her $88 and she gives a $20 tip (she goes about 5 or 6 times a year). How much extra should she tip her stylist for the holiday? Also she gives the woman who shampoos her hair ( there are 2 she doesn't always get the same one) $5, what should she tip for the holiday ,and to which woman should she give it to ( they work different days)? Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

I always tip my stylist $20 every time I'm at the shop.  If I land there close to christmas then I do boost my tip but it all depends on when I need to be there.

I was just there a week ago so I end up at the shop very close to end of December so my girl Audrey will get more from me.  I don't go overboard but I think what I give her is fair.

If/when I end up with someone else shampooing after my hair has processed I do not tip the person who does it - something I just don't do.  And no I don't feel guilty.

I pay $25 for a haircut and give a $5 tip - I get my haircut every 4 weeks - it grows fast. For Christmas I give her the $25 for the haircut and an additional $20.

Re: Holiday Tipping At The Salon

I no longer go to a hair salon since my stylist for the past three years does hair in her home and charges a flat $65 for cut, color, and blow dry.  However, when I did go to a salon, I usually tipped the shampoo person $1--$2-$3 for the holiday (the stylists in our local salons take care of the shampoo person, and the $5 that your mother is tipping is more than generous).  I usually doubled the tip for my stylist, who I had for many years (I dropped her when she always found a reason to up the price--I had retired--and wanted me to be blonde--"you will grow to love it.")

So, for your mom, I would, at this point, give the shampoo person(s) $5 (cut it back after the new year) and, if money is tight, maybe $20-$30 for the stylist.  If she has been going there a long time, the stylist depends on the reliability of your mother's business and probably is not worried about the size of the tip.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

I never tip extra or bring gifts to my hairdresser during the holidays.  My feeling is that I am a good customer and she should be giving me a gift.  I tip handsomely throughout the year.

I'd give the stylist $25 and I'd give each of the shampoo girls $10.  For the shampoo girl who isn't there that day, you/your mom can put it in an envelope with her name on it, leave it with the receptionist, and she'll get it the next time she works.

That is a lousy and cheap attitude.  Nice Christmas spirit.

Re: Holiday Tipping At The Salon

My hairdresser is the best!  I usually want in on a last minute notice and she always accommodates.  She does exactly what I want and always makes me look great.  There are no specific shampoo girls at the salon, she does everything.    I always give her a $20 tip.  For Christmas, I like to give her an actual gift.  This year I got her a Lug travel bag that will have some Philosophy in it.
