Highlights turned out too light :(

I normally have dark blonde hair and I wanted to brighten my hair up a little with some highlights, but the color turned out so light and too bright. I am so sad about it, I just want to cry Smiley Sad!! Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do to fix it? I do not even know what to do.
