Here I go again - pump problems

I just opened my Christmas Wen sampler and I'm having the same problem I've always had, I can't get the pumps to work. Before I give up and just use an old pump, can someone tell me how I'm supposed to do this? I've turned left and right, both by pushing down and pulling up. I've hit it gently on the counter. Nada.
