Canada's national health authority is recalling the Herbivore Pink Cloud Moisture Cream from Sephora because of mold contamination.
Herbivore prides itself on using "clean," "natural" ingredients and very little preservative. They claim to use Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate as the Pink Cloud cream's preservative. But I don't see it in the ingredient list. I don't see any preservatives at all. Did I miss something?
"Cosmetic scientist Perry Romanowski, founder of the Beauty Brains, notes that natural beauty lines start out with more potential for infection because ingredients taken from nature harbor contaminants: spores for bacteria, yeast, etc. Standard cosmetic products simply don’t have the same kind of initial contamination issues. Furthermore, natural preservatives just don’t work nearly as well as traditional preservatives."
What do you think? Do you store/handle your natural products differently? Do you throw them out after 6 months? Did you ever find mold in your cosmetics?

@Porcelain @I have never found mold in any product so far but I sure will rethink my handling and storage of all natural products.I wonder if there was something unclean at the factory.

I feel that it is the company's responsibliity to inform you on their container how to store. I have some Herbivore's products with no trouble at all.

I avoid natural beauty products because without preservatives or adequate ones, they will spoil and go bad or go rancid quickly.

I was disappointed to see this news because I've been drawn to the products in this line. They're so pretty and appealing, even if they don't seem quite targeted to my age demographic. They seem to be intended for a slightly younger crowd.
A big mystery to me is how they make them pink without any coloring listed in the ingredients. Must be some red plant extract in there somewhere? One of these days I will try to figure that out. I'm sure this one contamination issue, if contained, will not be the end of Herbivore.
