Help with fingernails breaking this winter

This winter my fingernails have started breaking off worse than they ever have! I don't know if it is all the below zero temps we have had but enough is enough. Anyone know what I can do to help my fingernails grow? I have tried the pink gel coat from QVC and no matter how long I used it, it didn't work and my nails kept breaking. Suggestions please!!!

Re: Help with fingernails breaking this winter

I find my nails are better if I give the cuticles a lot of moisturizing and keep them pushed back (gently). It seems to make a difference in my nails. I rarely polish them. I suppose the cold could have something to do with it.

Re: Help with fingernails breaking this winter

Hard As Hoof Nail Strengthening Cream has helped my nails immensely. I bought this in the beginning of December after reading about it here. Let me tell you, it WORKS! My nails had been weak and peeling. I had one thumb nail that would never grow long enough for anything. Well, now it is a nice, normal nail that does not peel or split. I massage this cream into my cuticles and nail bed and under the nail. Consistency is the key here. Keep it by my table in the den while watching television or reading, and do this nightly. I also just buff my nails to a natural shine, a couple of times a week. This has helped to remove those annoying ridges you can get (Revlon Crazy Shine Buffer)! I found the cream at Walmart ($5) and the Revlon Buffer at Target ($4 or under).

I now have nails that I have had to trim because of their length! Amazing to me! Don't expect miracles overnight. You have to be consistent. I am now reaching the end of the one ounce jar. I no longer want to mess with manicures, costly and would rather spend my money on clothes (Big Linea fan here). Hope this helps. I can only speak from my experience. Google it and read the other reviews as well.

Thanks Texasmom1 I will try it. I know nothing will work overnight, just want something to work and this sounds like it will work for me. Going to Walmart tomorrow, hope my Walmart carries it. Thanks again!!!

I find perfect formula the best for me and I've tried many nail products. Only product that allows me a perfect 10 that don't break.

It's not the cold; it's the dry heat in buildings. I have the problem and it hasn't been very cold here. Moisturize your nails and cuticles as often as you can with a rich cream or oil.

Lots of hand cream, or oils. I've also been using Nailtiques formula 2, and it is really working!! Making my nails stronger and they don't peel or break. Been using it fairly regularly for about a month. Hth!

My nails are a mess also. They usually are brittle, but they are so fragile right now I am not sure what to do. I do not think a cream is going to cut it. I think I need some type of hardener or other polish that protects the nail.

Keep your hands out of water as much as possible. Gloves to do anything! And when you go outside - always wear gloves. Also, try Biotin. I was not convinced of this but my derm told me I must use this and be faithful and persistent as it takes a long time to really see results. I am starting to see the condition of my nails improving. They are no longer chipping, peeling, etc. I am not trying to wear them long, but keeping them very short at this point and not wearing any polish to try to get them in very good shape.
