Help for serious dry flaky skin

Hi everyone,

I feel like my face is falling off!!!

It's soooo dry and flaky.  I put on a serum and moisturizer in the a.m. and by 10:00 a.m. it's dry and flaking.

I'm using Serious Skin Care A wash, serum and moisturizer.

I've also exfoliated a few time a week lately.

I feel like I need to do something drastic but I just don't know what.

I need some serious hydration.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

P.S. I'm 55 with slightly sensitive ruddy skin.

Re: Help for serious dry flaky skin

has it always been dry and flaky or just now?  Is it from a product you are using perhaps that is drying it out?

I would go to a dermatologist and see if it is external or maybe an internal issue with thyroid etc.

I would stay away from SSC

Recommending Isomers because I have been where you are and that line saved me.

You need to get a cleanser that is ph balanced to start and cooper p

Make sure you are not Vit D deficient.

Re: Help for serious dry flaky skin

I understand as I have the same issues.

About 3 months ago when Josie Maran has the TSV, she had the face butter in it.

I have been using this everynight, and my skin is definately more nurished.  I think it has also improved my eye bags.

Its a very light product, not greasy at all, and I really like it.  I am tired of spending money time and time again with products that do nothing.  TRY the face butter.

I hope this helps.Woman Happy

It makes a difference what moisturizer you use.  I like the SSC Reverse Lift cream (in a jar).  I then put JM Argan Oil on top.  The argan oil really helps intensify the moisturizer for me.  I use it both a.m. and p.m.

Usually dry skin is a result of what you do to it to make it that way. Things to avoid are hot water and harsh cleansers which are two of the most offending when it comes to dry skin. This happens when the acid mantle layer of the skin is disrupted causing flaking, redness and possibly acne or other skin blemishes.

Change cleansers and use a good moisturizer. Avoid hot water at all costs. I would not exfoliate until your skin returns to normal which may take at least three or more days.

I love SSC's a line but it can be drying, especially this time of year. I use their A line a few times a week- but alternate products  just to change it up and  my skin benefits!!

What other lines/products  do you have at home? I've been using some Philosophy, Honest (Jessica Alba),  M Asam - other SSC lines as well.

Limit the exfoliation too- a few times a week is too much (no matter what the vendors/hosts say!). Once a week max -  with your skin being dry maybe even wait a couple weeks till it calms down.

Another vote to go and see a dermatologist for the right diagnosis.

I agree it may be best to see a dermatologist if this is a sudden, severe, change.

I would quit the SSC stuff.  I have tried every mild cleanser and they still leave me dry.  The best I have found is Cetaphil Extra Gentle (I believe that's what it's called).  And it is the least expensive one also!  MIght be too much or too severe exfoliation.  I found a Kate Somerville moisturizer (not one of the pricey ones) that is really helpful.  It's in a teal box for about $45, and it lasts a long time.  I'll post it later if you want.

I was going to post on this, so I'll include it here.  I am a total skeptic when it comes to supplements.  I do take Omega-3 fish oil, CoQ10, and I tried another a few months ago.  All by Andrew Lessman.  I tried Phytoceramides for about 3 months now.  It is said to help with skin moisture.

I darn think it has!!  I take it twice a day.  My skin has not been nearly as dry and uncomfortable as it has over the last few years.  I can shower with other washes than just one I had found.  I am not scratching my skin nor feeling like I have to rush to put body butter on.

Go look at Andrew Lessman's stuff and check out Phytoceramides and read reviews.  I have held off on mine to wait and see if it works.  I think it has!

Re: Help for serious dry flaky skin

My suggestion would be to invest in one of those steam humidifiers for your bedroom while sleeping.  I'm sure you've invested more than your fair share of serums, creams and topicals - why not give this a try.

I still go along with the recommendation of seeing a dermatologist and I'm rather certain he would not deter you from the humidifier suggestion.  I hope this might help!
