Has Anyone Successfully Done a Gel Manicure (Like Shellac) at Home?

I have such bad nails - ridges, brittle nails, bad cuticles, etc. and it's almost impossible to keep polish on my natural nails. I don't want to get artificial nails because of the cost and how damaging they are. I would love to have regular Shellac manicures but they are so costly every 2-3 weeks ($30 + tip)!

I know Shellac is intended for salon use, but has anyone successfully done a Shellac manicure at home? If so, do you have any tips for someone who is not a professional but would like to try it? Any input would be appreciate!
