Hair extension question?

I have short hair. I use spray wax to give it that messy look. I want to try and grow it out , but I always get discouraged and cut it off again. Has anyone had hair extensions sewn in? A friend I work with ( who happens to be a black woman ) . Told me I can get them and there are some extensions that are sewn in and you wash and style it as your would your natural hair. Do you think it's possible?
