Growing out a short layered pixie cut

Ugh. Already at a real awkward stage. Still very short on top, nape is curling down the back of my neck, sides are now a quarter inch over my ears. Heading into mullet territory unless I act fast. Some waviness in areas but it's not a lovely uniform wave pattern. Cowlicks. Overall, shapeless. I have an appt later today at a new salon for consultation and hopefully some shaping, and a plan.
Have googled this topic. Would also like your experience and photos if you have any that would be helpful. I'm not sure of my goal-a shag? A short bob? My hair is very fine.

@smoochy I'm right there with you but a little farther along in the process. I  find that getting regular neck trims helps and you avoid that mullet stage.

@smoochy  I can't help you with growing it out.  Just thought I'd mention I've always liked shags or something with layers, but hairdressers seem to always recommend bobs for people with fine hair.

Join the club.  I've been letting the top grow out, except for the bangs, and just keep getting the bottom along the nape trimmed as needed and sides blended in. It's basically a short bob right now,

@smoochy. I feel your pain. That's why I've not done a short-do for awhile now because of that "growing out stage".  The last time I transitioned with a bob so it could accommodate the new growth at the various lengths. The best advice is what you're doing and going to the professional and working out a plan. Good luck and look forward to your new look and enjoy!

Re: Growing out a short layered pixie cut

@smoochy another thing I wanted to mention is that, about 3 months ago or so, I was getting really fed up with the awkward stages my hair was going through (and I was determined to just let it grow out, all one length) so, on a whim, I walked into a hair salon and asked for a shag. Well, silly me, I thought a shag was a shag, like back in the 70's, but, apparently, there are many different kinds of "shags" now, so then I was at a loss, not really knowing what to ask for. I just ended up getting the ends trimmed and went back to just waiting and growing it out some more. 🤷‍♀️

Re: Growing out a short layered pixie cut

I have done this at least three times and all you can do is grit your teeth.  Really awkward.  It seems to help if you keep the back of the neck trimmed up.

My sympathy to you.  Takes a while too.

Re: Growing out a short layered pixie cut

I let my shag cut grow out for about a year getting regular trims to keep it in shape. Then after I got to almost one length I just could not take it any longer. I have a lot of hair and it was always in my face. At night the fan would blow it and tickle my face so I was always brushing it away so I called my stylist and went back to my original cut.

Re: Growing out a short layered pixie cut

I have always worn my hair super short. usually a mixed cut pixie, high over the ears. then covid. stayed home and now its been 3.5 yrs since I've had a 'real' cut.

I just shaved my neck and otherwise let it go until it was long enough in the back to pull into my 'RBG' low pony, wore headbands to hold tops/sides to my head.

as it grew, I started trimming only the longest hair in the back while the rest was left to grow. literally turned my head upside down, combed all hair forward so I could cut the very back (and see what I was doing).

now days, I keep trimming the longest while the straggling shorter hairs keep growing. I can wear my hair in my tinkerbell top knot and am thrilled with the look.

first time in my life to have long hair. actually FAR easier upkeep than pixie that needed daily wash, products, hair dryer, etc.

all else fails, wear a hat ;-)  good luck :-))

@smoochy

That's funny. As I was reading your post I was thinking to myself mmm, that's going to be a mullet LOL. Sounds like you'll need to keep the bottom layer cut until the other layers grow out some more. I have a shag with five or six layers. It's cut choppy and chunky.
