Going to a new beauty salon soon

My last beautician retired.  I need to go to a new one.  I'm excited for the change. The lady will be younger and I think this could be very good.

It's been years, any suggestion?

Experience or age doesn't have much to do with hair styling or cutting. Doing hair well has more to do with artistic talent.

I hope your new stylist works out great, if not, just move on until you click with someone.

Go slow and don't allow any drastic changes until you're sure you like their work.

Be specific in what style you want. I was just at the salon yesterday, and my stylist told me that the most difficult clients to do are the ones who are not specific in what they're looking for. So much can be misinterpreted because the client cannot articulate what they want.

Re: Going to a new beauty salon soon

@qualitygal   About five years ago my longtime beautician retired too.  Luckily, a friend referred me to her stylist at a different salon.  She's also younger too, but very good.  I've been really happy with her work.

The only tiny bump we ever had was the first time she didn't leave the color on quite long enough, so my gray wasn't covered as well.  But she more than made up for it.  I think it takes a visit for them to really get a good sense of your hair.  Good luck.  Please let us know what you think.

Take photos of what you want with you.

Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive what could go right.

@qualitygal - How exciting! I have a good friend who owns a salon, so here's what I recommend:

Is it possible your new stylist knows your stylist who retired? They talk, and she might already have an idea of the type of hair you have and what you like.

You can gently make suggestions, but I would approach it more like, "I'd like this. Do you think it would work for me?" I know for a fact they don't like to be dictated to, like "I want you to cut it exactly like. . ." LOL!

On the other hand, like @Effie54 said, they don't like it when you say, "Whatever." You can always say, "I'm not sure. Can you make some recommendations?"

If you're not happy at the end, but you want to give the stylist another chance, be specific about what you don't like. The stylist should accommodate you.

Have fun, and let us know how it goes!  Smiley Happy

@Effie54

My stylist absolutely loves it when clients give her a lot of detail and photos of what they want. I like it because I want what I want, but everyone is different.

The last time I saw her I did a good three minutes of blah, blah and ended it with, "And the back (gesture) you know."

She looked at me sternly in the mirror, and said, "What the HELL, does that mean?"

I fell over laughing.

@beach-mom @qualitygal Yes, I absolutely agree. It works both ways. When someone doesn't know what they want, it's best to ask the stylist what they recommend; and be specific. It's nice to get fresh ideas from a new stylist.
