Re: Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C and Retinol Question

@monicakm - I use Vit C in the am and then alternate nights with GA and Retinol.

Whew!  That sounds easy enough for a kindergartener.

I think I can work with that.  Thanks Smiley Wink

In case it matters, lets say the sun has no bearing on what I do or don't use on my face because I get about 10 hours of sun a YEAR.  Is your chart saying I can't use Retinol or Copper Peptides at all?  I've used this Missha Vita C for 3 years with niacinamide and at the same time.  I'm changing my Vit C to morning now.

Ascorbic acid can be layered with retinol but it can cause a lot of irritation. Also, the pH of each is different enough to possibly alter the effects of either one. Some people don't have any problems with layering retinol and ascorbic acid. All I can say is try it with caution.

Ascorbic acid will oxidize the copper in copper peptides making both components useless. Ascorbic acid will also break apart peptides so they become less effective.

Re: Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C and Retinol Question

Luckily for me I guess, I haven't used a strictly Vit. C product in years.  It may be in the ingredient deck, but is not the main character.  I use either PTR retinol or Tretinoin gel nightly and I use niacinamide both am & pm.  I also don't use glycolic acid daily.  For exfoliation I mostly rely on my washrag/Olay spin brush, but occationally will use an enzyme mask although I'm not particularly good at remembering to do it.

I have some glycolic or salicylic body cream I use on my arms to try to avoid farmer tan (even though I do use sunscreen when I'm outside), and I have some glycolic pads I also will use on my arms and on a problematc finger that develops hard skin next to the nail.

Re: Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C and Retinol Question

Angie at Hot and Flashy has a video on layering acids. I watched it the other day because it is all foreign to me.

Re: Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C and Retinol Question

GA is more than just an exfoliant on the surface of the skin. Within the group of skincare acids, GA is the smallest molecule of them all meaning it has the ability to easily penetrate and go beyond where other acids cannot reach. GA can stimulate collagen b/c it can go to depths where collagen is formed. The longer you leave GA on the skin, the deeper it can go. GA is also a great humectant which will plump the skin from within.

What you can layerwith VC depends on the type of VC you've chosen. Some can be layered with other actives with little or no issues while other VC derivatives might interfere or cause the VC itself to become less effective.

The blue bars mean proceed with caution. Probably okay to apply products on opposite ends of the clock...day or night but not at the 2same time unless your skin can tolerate both.

Re: Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C and Retinol Question

Is there a type of Vit C that is better than another?  How about a brand?  I guess I must be missing out since I am not currently using a Vit C product.  I use glycolic in the am (then apply sunscreen) and RA at night all by itself.
