Formulated to make you need more product?

This is a question for the ingredients experts ...

I've read that some inexpensive lip balms have an ingredient that actually dries out your lips, so that you need more balm. It's a beauty version of planned obsolescence, I suppose?

Anyway, I've been using the HIAJ from the recent Philosophy TSV, and my skin seems really dry; drier than it was before I started using it. Is it my imagination?

Thoughts?
