I was perusing some hair products on Amazon and discovered a brand that actually used the term Ojon Oil in it's description which sorta surprised me.  So, I had to read a little more.  Since EL divested themselves of the Ojon line of products, the name can now be used by anyone.  Ojon Oil is not the real name of the ingredient anyways. It's a type of palm oil (Elaeis Oleifera Kernel Oil) or Batana Oil.

The brand (T'Zikal) has a web site that you can order from directly. Products are rather pricey.  They have a small wavy hair collection which is meant to last a month for $60, full sized would cost $104.  The small size shampoo by itself is $10 for 2.5 oz.

One of the Amazon reviewers claimed that it was a good replacement for the original and even smelled similar which can be good or bad.  I looked at the ingredient list and no silicones, which is a plus for me, and a lot of botanicals.  There are 3 proteins in it which for some is good, others bad.  I noticed on the hydrating shampoo, the Ojon Oil ingredient is the last ingredient, so it's really not doing much in that product.  However, it's the 3rd ingredient in the conditioner.

Another note from the comments, the shampoo is rather thin which apparently makes it come out of the small tube rather quickly.

I'm adding it to my wish list for now and may try these products in the future after I pay off some bills.  I never used the original Ojon but I did like the Ojon Tawaka conditioner, so I am familiar with the perfumy/musty fragrance

I LOVED OJON----used that brown  paste stuff on my head as the hair was re growing from chemo--and there was a spray leave in conditioner that was the best thing ever. Felt like it really babied my poor bald head and new baby hair. I miss it!!!

I also loved Ojon- that thick buttery paste conditioner that liquified in the warmth of your hands- I will look for this one and report back- I would not, however, describe the smell as "Perfumey/musty"  I think it was almost nut/coffee like-

Well, Let me go look for it!

Thank you!!!

Exactly ...  you described it perfectly.  I still have a few containers of it and use it sparingly.  I also have a cople of other Ojon products that I continue to use. They were wonderful.

Re: For the Ojon lovers

Before the Ojon brand ever came into existence there was/is a palm tree called ojon palm which was named that by the natives who live where the palm tree grows. Denis Simioni just happened to name his original product by the same name and had it trade named. No one ever owned the word 'ojon' just like no one ever owned the word 'coconut'.

@SilleeMee  I beg to differ on this one.  I noticed when Denis returned with Tweak'd they would often refer to his previous product but would never say the word Ojon. Then, after EL abandoned the product they suddenly started using the word in his presentations.  A simple G search also brings up this:  https://trademarks.justia.com/786/74/ojon-78674460.html

There's another link that also references the trademark and that it has been abandoned - Failure to respond.  The owner was Origins Natural Resources Inc. and the Correspondent was Donna M Ruggiero with The Estee Lauder Companies, Inc.

BTW, Ojon didn't even use the term Ojon oil or Ojon Palm Oil in their list of ingredients, at least not on the products that I used

@Icegoddess

The Miskito Indians in Central America are the people who named the palm tree 'ojon'. That word is derived from Spanish (Creole) and it means 'big eyes'. I would imagine b/c the nuts from the tree look sort of like eyes when they are cut open....LOL!

Denis did not make up that word 'ojon'. He just had the word trade named to use as the name of his company.

@SilleeMee That may all be true, but in trademarking the name, he basically owned it as did Estee Lauder when they bought the brand.  The trademark had to go with the brand, and Denis was not allowed to use it for selling purposes, at least for anything associated with the category it was trademarked under, until they abandoned the trademark.

It's like "The Cure" which is trademarked by the Susan G Komen Foundation.  They do not allow any of the other cancer organizations to use that term and will go after them legally if they do.

@Mothertrucker I never actually used the original Ojon, but I did use the Tawaka and to me there was a musty odor that it seemed like they added a perfumy fragrance to try and cover it up.  I could've done without it.  I didn't mind the musty part.

I LOVED Ojon and I too still have my original Ojon restorative hair mask.  I use it very sparingly on my ends on wash day and it never disappoints.  I was sad to see this brand disappear. EL ruined it when they changed the formula up. I wonder where the Tawira people and their preserve are now!
