Re: Finishing Powder - Need recommendations and application tips

AngelPuppy, there is a distinct difference between a finishing powder and a powder foundation. Finishing powders aren't intended to cover much, but rather just set other makeup you've applied and are great for touch ups. It sounds like you wish to try a powder foundation.

If I have that correct, then may I suggest first a couple of old stand-bys when it comes to powder foundation: M.A.C.'s Studio Fix and Lancome's Dual Finish. Both of these are pressed powders. In the mineral category Pur Minerals is the only one I recommend. It is also pressed. One more suggestion is the excellent Tarte Amazonian Clay Airbrush Foundation (loose).

My application for any powder foundation is to brush it on using a powder brush, and then use a sponge or concealer brush to dab a little on any spots which need additional coverage.

If indeed you are asking about a finishing powder to set your liquid foundation my suggestion would be Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil. There are a dozen more I can name, but this one is definitely in the upper echelon of doing what a finishing powder is supposed to do. I prefer the original BE loose, but I think the Ready line (pressed) also has a version of Mineral Veil.

Re: Finishing Powder - Need recommendations and application tips

I have skin similar to yours, 64 years old broken caps on face. I have just switched to all Jane Iredale Products. Botantical makeup remover, smooth affair primer, BB cream in 3, dream tint in medium light and Pressed powder in Natural. I love the finish and coverage. As money allows I'm going to purchase all products from Jane Iredale. Great customer service, they will send you samples free of charge, that's how got started. I am very happy I found this line of cruelty free makeup. I have used Chanel, Laura Mercier, Estee Lauder Double Wear, Bobbie Brown and others, this is by far the best line for me.

Re: Finishing Powder - Need recommendations and application tips

I use Physician's Formula CoverTox as a finishing powder - I don't usually use a foundation. I apply it with a synthetic brush (real animal hair makes my skin break out). When I feel the need for a foundation, I use M Asam magic finish and then the powder. Just the powder alone gives my face a nice glow - several young girls have asked me what make-up I wear.

A couple of suggestions - IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores, which is translucent, or for coverage, Tarte Amazonian Clay Powder Foundation. I find both of these far superior to Bare Minerals for mature skin. IT Cosmetics has the best brushes. The new buki set looks really nice. For the Tarte foundation, I use a flat-head brush. Any face brush would work for a translucent powder.

Pressed powder I use Chanel and loose powder I use BE. I don't use both at the same time, obviously, just whatever I am in the mood for and depending on the foundation I use.

I use a big fluffy brush for applying the powder. Make sure you don't get too much on your brush as you just want a light dusting. If I accidentally apply too much powder, I use a clean fan brush to sweep off the extra.

I only use powder pressed or finishing later in the day for touch ups. I like to set my makeup with a setting spray. Love MUFE.

Re: Finishing Powder - Need recommendations and application tips

All of these things sound great. I am such a bo*b with makeup application! I know that's a big problem. You could have the best products and tools in the world, but if you don't know what you are doing -- forget it!

Are there any really good makeup tutorials for women like me --- my age, my concerns -- and who show things that are pretty simple?

I love the sounds of a lot of the products you have posted. But I am just afraid after I purchase, I will still be unhappy because of poor method of applying.

As for whether I want a finishing powder or a powder foundation --- I am thinking I want a finishing powder to go over my foundation. I always found powder foundation to be drying. But, there again, I have probably not tried the right ones!!!

Thanks, everyone. You're the best!

Please go straight to lisaeldridge.com. She is a professional who does stars, cover shoots and more, but has a wealth of how-to videos on her website using models of all ages. She is a lovely person and so good at explaining everything. She uses drug store to high end products, and always lists them. She has a whole series on just foundation that is a great place to start.

Re: Finishing Powder - Need recommendations and application tips

i am 65. i always finish my makeup with a dusting of BE tinted mineral veil. i use lots of different foundations (always experimenting and switching it up!) but i am so in love with what that tinted mineral veil does as a finishing touch of perfection!

op, you know that you can go into sephora or ulta (if there is one near you) and they will not only apply samples for you and show you how, but they will also give you samples to try before you buy!

also, i will second pas4116's suggestion about the lisa eldridge website. i love her tutorials and she would probably be really helpful to you!

good luck!

Re: Finishing Powder - Need recommendations and application tips

angelpuppy... Hi! Here is what works for me, and I have issues similar to yours... liquid foundation + faerieorganic mineral foundation + faerieorganic mineral veil. I use a buki that has an approx. 1 1/2 inch brush. Often, if trying for more powder and not to disturb what is under the veil/minerals, I will actually dab the minerals on first and then smooth out any excess.

I find that this product (the minerals) gives a dry on top but moist underneath finish to my skin. HTH
