"Red" is the MOST DIFFICULT hair color to maintain

TRUTH!  I've been a red-head since 1995.  I can say some brands are better than others.  Two of the best color brands my hairedressers have used over the years are Aveda and L'Oréal Majirel.  One of the worst I remember is Schwarzkopf.

@SurferWife  Aren't you the one who lives in Hawaii ?

If, so, how are U doing ?

I use a sulfate free shampoo and I don’t think silicone is the answer since it costs your this theoretically it won’t let the dye penetrate as much. I’m just wondering which brands you have had luck with if you had color fading.

@Allthingsgirly67 I wasn't talking about applying a silicone to hair prior to coloring.  In fact, I clarify my hair prior to coloring.  I'm talking about adding silicone to the hair color mixutre, and according to this Abstract on Pubmed, it does help control fadage.  My guess is that those conditioner packets some box colors include to add to the the formula contain silicones, but I don't use box color so haven't looked at the ingredients.

Silicones used in permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes to reduce the fading and color change process of dyed hair occurred by wash-out or UV radiation

Abstract

Different kinds of silicones were incorporated directly into permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes. To ensure that the silicone was deposited to the hair fibers Si deposition was measured. Hair treated with a silicone free control or the silicone modified hair dyes was tested for color and lightness change (fading) by washing the treated tresses several times and measuring the color change. In a second experiment, hair treated with permanent hair dye was treated with UV radiation to show if silicones can reduce the color change initiated by UV light. The influence of the silicones to dry combing forces of permanent dyed hair untreated and treated with UV was also investigated. The tests showed that dimethiconol/dimethicone mixtures can reduce the washout of hair colorant clearly and silicone resins like trimethylsiloxysilcate or propylphenylsilsesquioxane are able to decrease the color change occurred by UV radiation in dyed hair.

Get your color done professionally. Home hair color doesn't hold up to what the pros use. I get my hair colored by my gal and it NEVER fades. Love it!

Another tip, don't wash your hair for 2 days after coloring.  I color on Thursday and then don't wash, not even rinse, until Sunday.  I also only use shampoo once or maybe twice a week.  I'll use a Co-wash for any other times I wash.

Avoid water for at least 2 days after hair dyeing. Because chlorine, salt and minerals found in H2O can cause hair’s cuticle (outer layer) to lift, accelerating pigment loss. Give your hair enough time to properly absorb the new color. Waiting to wash allows the dye to more thoroughly penetrate your hair shaft. If you wash your hair too soon, the hair color could lose its saturation. What to do if you have oily hair? No problem. Use dry shampoo. Mainly wait. It’s very important for the quality of your color.

Re: Fading hair color

[ Edited ]

I have found a product trio that allows me to go as long as 16 weeks, or even longer, without coloring!!! My hair is below my shoulders. Originally I was a deep brunette, but over the years I've gradually gone lighter. (Edited to add that the last time I colored my hair was April 30. Will probably color it in the next few weeks. And if I did not color my hair I would be mostly gray!!!)

I use Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Creme in Light Golden Brown...#63...costs about $8.50 at Target.

For shampoo I have found one that does not fade my color at all...Pantene Pro-V Color Shine. This stuff really works!!! Again at Target a large pump bottle sells for about $7.99.

And for root touch-ups I use Madison Reed Root Touch-Up Powder in Light Brown. I get mine at Amazon...runs between about $28 to $34, depending on whether there is a sale. This powder is absolutely amazing!!! It does not transfer and looks very natural. With the Pantene shampoo that does not fade my existing color, I only have to touch up my roots.

I don’t wash my hair for at least two days after coloring and I would go a salon if I could afford it. It’s just so annoying that the greys were showing up after two weeks when I colored my hair. I understand why many women go blonde because it’s easier to go a little longer without having to dye it so often. I am a medium warm brunette but I use light brown neutral because I understand that neutral works best for adhering color to hair. I wish I could go lighter but I don’t think it would be flattering for my coloring.

@ID2

A hair color expert I am not, but, I've done it both ways and the salon dye didn't last any longer than my boxed dye.  It's been at least 10 years since I've had my hair dyed at a salon.  So maybe it's different.

Thanks for asking!  Yes, I live in Hawaii, but I live on the island of Oahu.

You come to associate folks in here from their location and like interests.

When I heard about the fire I said mmmmmm think there is a gal from there and I remembered your red

hair and thought I'd do a shout out.

We were in Hawaii long time ago. I forget the time difference from Central time, but, I was ready to go shopping and the hotel clerk said "Ma'am it's 3a.m."

I go "oh no" had to go back to bed.

I hate time differences hahhaha England, is bad, too.

think they're 6-7 hrs. ahead. I hate being one hr behind Eastern. LOL It is good, though, as far as QVC is concerned. Their TSV changes at midnight, 11 my time!
