Face Primers:essential or not?

I am not sure about primers-is it just one more pore-clogging step or is there a primer that makes you feel it is an essential part of your makeup routine? Is there a non-silicone product out there you love? I tried BE's and wasn't convinced it did a thing that a good moisturizer didn't already do. Thoughts?
