Re: Face Primer

[ Edited ]

I have 58 year old oily skin.  My skin would eat my foundation without primer.

I first use a moisturizer with sunscreen, wait a couple of minutes.  Then apply Laura Geller's Matte Spackle Blur Stick.  It's absolutely the best primer I have found for my oily skin.  No tint, no tackiness, and it leaves a silky smooth matte finish as it completely erases my pores.

Some days, I leave it at that, with no foundation.  Other days, when I have to go into the office or out & about, I do apply my foundation over it.

I'm a big cheerleader for face primers.   I'm in my 70's too, but I still have oily skin. Not dry, like yours.  My skin also is blotchy with large pores on the sides of my nose.  I use a primer to prevent my complexion from getting greasy and shiny over the course of the day, plus smooth out and hide my large pores.  I use a neutralizing primer to camoflage the blotches.  My foundation then lasts all day, looks fresh, and is easy to remove at night.

I've used many primers over the years.  We're all different and not one primer will work for all of us.  My favorite is Mally's Neutralizing Primer.  I sometimes wear it instead of foundation.

@Shanus  turned me on to a Bobbi Brown moisturizer with primer.  I have very dry, sensitive skin and the BB has been fabulous.  I've no reaction to it, it doesn't ball up when applying my liquid foundation, and I really like how it performs.  Hope this helps.

@Misplaced Parisian

Can you tell me what Bobbi Brown primer this is?  Is it fragrance free?  I am looking for a primer which has some moisturizer, will not clog pores and has no fragrance.  Thank you!

@AngelPuppy1  It's called Vitamin Enriched Face Base.  There is a scent to it, but I don't believe "fragarance" has been added.  I think the scent is due to the citrus oil in it.  Scent lasts a few seconds, if that.  I've been using it for a while now and have not had a reaction (my skin is hyper sensi) and no clogged pores.  Hope this helps.

@Misplaced Parisian  So happy it's working for you. BTW, all BB moisturizers have a built in primer, but the Vitamin Enriched Face Base is more primer enriched although best for normal/oily skin. I layer it over BB Extra Repair Moisture Cream. Unfortunately, the "extra balm" was discontinued. Face Base does have fragrance.

@Ms tyrion2 , what is the purpose of wearing a primer without makeup?  What is the benefit?

@Peaches McPhee   Primer not only smoothes skin for foundation application, it also locks in skincare...a barrier between moisturizers, serums and the environment. It helps keeps the skin subtle.

When do you add your sunscreen when using a primer and also a foundation?

Sunscreen first then primer then foundation last. @SeaMaiden

I treat sunscreen like it's a skincare product so it always get applied directly on my skin.

@SilleeMee   I recently changed the order of application after BB Masterclass. Serum after cleansing, then spf and moisturizer. Primer next before foundation. I used to moisturize before Spf, but since Primer needs to go before foundation & my moisturizer has the primer, I switched them. Her point was the spf sits closer to the skin, has time to sink in and protect. Derm said it doesn't have to be last step as long as enough is applied and dries down before next step.

I never used to be a fan of wearing primers until one day I ran across an article (I can't remember where that was) about how pigments in foundations can reduce the SPF in sunscreen. So then I decided to start wearing a primer on top of my sunscreen and it turns out I really like the look and longevity of my foundation even more now. Woman Happy@Shanus

@SilleeMee    Same here. Never liked that extra step, but added a BB moisturizer (all have a primer) over my Skinceuticals moisturizer. It does make a difference. I will add, I don't wear a foundation....either tinted moisturizer (BB which has the primer) or just spot conceal w/ BB foundation stick. I used to think a separate primer was a waste of product since I don't need longevity in my makeup. I rarely apply and keep it on more than 6-8 hrs. As soon as I'm in for the day, I cleanse & moisturize and let my skin breathe & rest.

@Shanus  THANK YOU!  My skin is very dry and I was thinking about using something under the face base in the winter.  I commute to work via bus which means I'm out in the elements.  This time of year in Iowa is wicked and I think something under the face base (serum, a moisturizer) would make it perfect.  I'll have to experiment on the weekends.  Now during the summer when it's humidity galore I think the face base will be extra splendid without anything underneath.  I'm very grateful you told me about this. It solved MANY of my whines regarding my other primer.  I hope the world is treating you gently.

e.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer ($8 !) is everything I ever wanted in a primer and more. It is very hydrating (contains squalane) and I sometimes I put it on just to keep my face moisturized...I love it so much! You can also use it as an eyeshadow primer. It gives my face a nice satin finish,  my makeup stays fresh looking all day and doesn't move or change colors.  It has been compared to Tatcha's $50 Silk Canvas Balm.

ETA - There are also two newer Putty primers...a Matte and also a Luminous. I have not tried either.

I have recently fallen in love with the ELF Hydrating Primer.  I tried LG (who I do love) but hers made my eyes water constantly.  Have tried BM, liked it, but for $8 ELF is fine with me!

I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend, til death, your right to say it
