I went for a second opinion....my surgery is scheduled for July 16. I'm so worried about maintaining the face down posture for a week. Any tips if you've had this surgery?

There should be a medical chair you can rent for this type of surgery that will keep your head down..........check out your medical supply rental store.

I post on the 60's thread here and there is a poster named Katcat who has the same problem and is about to have surgery for it. Go to the thread and talk to her if you want to. I wish you well with your surgery. Blessings to you.

Re: Eye surgery for macular h*le

I had my surgery ( first surgery in my life) and it went very well..... No pain whatsoever. The 24 hr a day face down positioning is another story. I'm going bonkers but I know I have to persevere until it's over. I just ordered this stuff called Tiger Balm for a horrible stiff neck. Hope that relieves some of that pain. Oh, and I got a big ole black eye to boot!

Glad to hear that your surgery went well. I was wondering how you were. The face down thing does get easier. Don't be alarmed at not being able to see anything out of your affected eye even if they ask you that at the surgeon,s office. It's the gas bubble.

Re: Eye surgery for macular h*le

I currently have macular hole. I also had a cataract in the same eye and it was so close to being ripe (the cataract) that I had that surgery on the cataract last week to replace my lens. My macular hole is not as bad and hopefully I won't need surgery now but still do not know. I can tell you one thing because I have talked to the doctors and did some research online. Post op for macular hole is horrible. You have to lay face down for 50 minutes out of the hour for one week or more. Because I had the cataract surgery first I would only need to sleep on my right side with my head tilted down if I need to have the macular hole surgery. However, there are injections now that may heal the macular hole if it's not too bad and there is also a surgery that will not make you stay face down after surgery. So, get your questions ready for your appt. Macula is part of the Retina. The macular hole happens because of aging, genetics or a severe injury or so it is said. Good luck to you. I am praying that I won't need the surgery now.

I would rather have double knee replacement AGAIN than go through this macular eye surgery recovery....OMG! It sounds horrible!

Re: Eye surgery for macular h*le

I just got back from the eye dr. (post surgery 2nd exam). This was the cataract surgery. I now have 20/40 vision. When I got home, I called & scheduled an appt. with the Retina specialist in one month. THe thing is, my problem with the macular hole is only for close vision and that has improved some. Get a 2nd opinion if surgery is suggested.

Re: Eye surgery for macular h*le

I had to do the face-down recovery after surgery for a detached retina. More than once, in fact. I found the massage chair to be uncomfortable. I have a sectional sofa and figured out how to lie prone on it with my head over the side. I rested my chin on a pillow and faced the floor. Dear DH arranged the tv flat on the floor and I just watched it all day. Also, a prescription of mild xanax or something similar helped me from getting too antsy. Best of luck to you!
