I think I have Ichthyosis vulgaris. Extreme dry skin, I have battled this my entire life and I have the crocodile skin on my legs. I used Amlactin for over a year religiously not knowing at the time that I may have this. It did nothing for it. I started using Josie’s body butter in the morning and the alpha glycolic lotion at night.

in researching this condition I found that you need to take cool showers and put your moisturizer on immediately after showering. So I now shower twice a day in cool water. Otherwise, I have a hard time spreading the lotions  if I am dry.  I put my moisturizer on when my skin is still pretty wet because I barely dry off. The problem that I have is that it takes so much product to be able to spread it.

I have used over half of a tub of the Josies body butter which was the recent TSV so it was the supersize, and I'm on my second bottle of the glycolic cream (glycolic is recommended for this condition) and I've been using it for two and a half weeks.

Thinking that it may be cheaper to sub a couple mornings a week with Argon oil,  I stopped at Trader Joe's and picked up a bottle to try out. It took three full droppers for each of my lower legs and two droppers for each thigh. The product absorbs immediately, by the time I finish putting my creams or lotions on it is completely absorbd and I can dress. My skin is very soft and not greasy at all. Is there an easie/better way to spread these creams and oils so you don't need as much because this is getting expensive.

Re: Extreme dry skin and Argon

I can't answer your question, but have you seen a dermatologist?  It sounds like you are just guessing at what condition you have.  An expert can tell you exactly why your skin is so dry and how to treat it.

The oil needs to be applied on top of lotions/creams. That will help seal in the moisture and prevent water loss from your skin so you won't be needing to reapply as much.

I always apply my body products with wet hands even if it means re-wetting them as I apply my products and that seems to help make it easier to spread over larger areas plus the water helps moisten my skin as I go along with the application.

Just wanted to mention something about argan oil...

For me argan oil dries out my skin over time. The problem is that the oil, when applied, causes my own oil glands (the few that I have) to stop working b/c the glands 'think' there's already enough oil on my skin so my oil glands stop producing oil. I cannot use argan oil b/c of that. Other oils don't seem to do that. It's argan oil mostly.

@MG Chris   You need to see a dermatologist who can prescribe a MEDICAL product instead of using a lightweight beauty product.

@MG Chris Of course, you are seeing a derm.  @SilleeMee introduced me to Alpha.....before that I was using Amlactin.  I have found drinking water and eating water rich foods (especially melons) helps with skin moisture.  For me, it's an internal condition....keep the water/water rich foods on hand.💧💦

Wishing you the best...keep us posted.

My suggestions: make sure you’re drinking plenty of water, only take a cool shower once a day and immediately follow with your glycolic cream then a good quality sweet almond or avocado oil. If this condition persists, it may be worth seeing another dermatologist for a second opinion.
