Do they really make a difference ???

Can't imagine that they could. My cheap one does a great job.

My 10.00 Conair dryer bought at least 5 yrs. ago serves me well.
When it finally goes, I will replace it w/the same model.

Well, if you have tight kinky curls like I do and want to blow dry your hair straight, the power and speed of the pricey dryers is needed. I've had the Conairs and other lower priced dryers. They dry the hair adequately enough, but even if I exhaust my arms frying my hair for more than a half hour, I cannot get the smoothing I get from Chi or T3 in 10 to 15 minutes. The results and time difference makes the pricey dryer worth every extra dollar for me.
The same is true with irons (flat and curling) in my case. I can pass and pass with those moderate flat irons and my hair is still not right. One pass with a Chi and my kinks are smoothed.

I wouldn't know. The most I ever paid for a hair dryer is $20.

For me, a less expensive dryer works just fine. If you have super thick, longer hair though you may benefit from a more expensive salon-grade hair dryer because they will dry faster and last longer.

I have fine, thin curly hair…. layered and above my shoulders. I'm not skilled at styling my hair, and don't have much patience for it. I used Conair dryers for years and years. Then, watched a presentation and bought an expensive dryer a couple years ago, with every expectation that it would be a waste and that I'd send it back. But I couldn't bring myself to package it up. It does make drying my hair faster and easier.

My hair feels softer when I use my Chi. (I'm not really an expensive hair dryer person, but I found this one at Marshalls for about half the regular price.)

I can not believe it would make a difference, only difference is the money.

Hot air is hot air, so no, there is no difference for MOST people with short or average hair.
If you have longer/thicker hair you might need a dryer with more power. Buy one with the highest wattage you can find. A ceramic/tourmaline heating element willl dry your thick/longer hair faster and won't get as hot as a metal heating element. (better for your hair)
Look for one that isn't too heavy so your arms won't get tired. Expensive doesn't mean better. You will pay more for a dryer if you need better than average features such as ceramic or tourmalline, but those can be found at a great deal too. Don't pay for the name on the box.
