I use Mario Badescu's glycolic toner. Its an excellent exfoliator, gentle and non drying, especially in this harsh cold weather! The price is great and it lasts a long time. They also send three samples with an order! I love it!

#emmiesmom, I really like Proactiv Glycolic toner for the same reason. It's a great exfoliator, gentle, non-drying, and reduces dark spots on my face and hands. It's also really affordable.

These days I'm using Fleur de Lis Rice & Papaya Enzyme Powder (dupe for Tatcha) every morning. Before I started my new routine, I would exfoliate weekly with Cure Aqua Gel Exfoliator. I liked that one a lot and would definitely go back to it if I ever discontinued using the enzyme powder. Both products are available on Amazon.

Hi! Where is the Fleur de Lis Rice & Papaya Enzyme Powder made? It sounds good! TIA!

Hi Michelle,
I buy it on Amazon (4 oz./$14.95 + $7.95 shipping). Yeah, the shipping is kinda high, but sometimes that's life. I justify it because you get twice the amount of Tatcha's. It comes in unscented and several scented options. So far, I've only tried the vanilla one and the unscented. The vanilla is pleasant. I wouldn't say the unscented is unpleasant per se, but it's plain. It's tolerable and reminds me of baby rice cereal. Next time I'm going to try either the lavender or the chamomile.

Re: Exfoliator recommendations needed

To replicate Kate's Exfolikate you'll want to get an exfoliator that includes both physical and chemical exfoliation as that is one of the reasons why hers became so popular. Skinn's DermaAppeal, I believe, contains both but check ShopHQ's website to be sure.

When I got Kate's this summer, I bought small sizes off eBay (.50 oz.) and spent very little for each. Even these small travel size containers will last you at least a month or two. It doesn't take a lot so I think each .50 ounce container lasted me over 6 weeks. It is a way to continue using Kate's, if you want to, while keeping the cost manageable.

To get a combo of physical and chemical as Kate's is, look for some type of acid in the ingredients (Kate's has three but you will get similar results with just 1 or 2) It can be alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic, mandelic etc.............. just as long as it has some acid to fulfill the chemical part of exfoliation.

I know many love Serious Skin Care's Gommage but I personally don't know if it is a combo of both. You could look it up on HSN and see what the ingredients are. I see it recommended here a lot so know it has a loyal following.

You could also google "chemical and physical exfoliator" and see what pops up.

You have gotten some great suggestions here but I thought since you started this post with a request for a "Kate dupe" that you would want to be sure to consider one that really is similar in composition to Kate's. Don't think all that were suggested have the chemical portion included but am sure they are good exfoliators.

I happened to be listening to Kate the other night when she spoke at length about Exfolikate and why it has been so popular. Kate definitely feels that the duo of both physical and chemical exfoliation in one formula is largely responsible for her great success with Exfolikate.

Re: Exfoliator recommendations needed

Here's a question - how do you find the different exfoliator methods -- scrubs vs. pads vs. enzyme serums??

Some scrubs I find too harsh (such as SSC C-Extreme). Some pads either too sticky or feel like they leave a residue and not so effective (such as Dr. Graf).

Any thoughts on these different exfoliator methods and are there any not yet mentioned which are favorites??

My personal belief and preference is for something more gentle and/or finely milled - a little gritty is fine, but nothing called a scrub - that just seems too harsh. The kind made with crushed apricot pits (and similar) are very hard on your skin, they're actually so rough that they tear it up. When I was using Cure Aqua Gel, I applied it to dry skin and it only took a couple of seconds of rubbing it around for it to work and lift off the dead skin. After rinsing, there was no stick residue, just smooth skin. The enzyme powder that I currently use is slightly gritty, but still gentle. I'm left with a smooth surface and no kind of residue.

Re: Exfoliator recommendations needed

To quickly get the dead skin off, I find nothing beats Starmaker's One Minute Peel. It is similar to Ice Element's product/peel, but smells better and is, IMO, more effective and a bit less messy. PTR's FirmEx (sp?) peel appears to be a clone of it. If you search around online, you can usually pick up a 2oz tube of it for around $35. I use alot of different exfoliating products, but if I want something that completely removes the dead skin fast, this is the one I grab. I should also mention, a 2 oz tube will last for months.

Hi! Thanks for the info. It really does sound good. That is a good point about the shipping. Tatcha's is very expensive. Is this product also made in Japan? TIA!

It is a Japanese product, but ships within the USA. Here are the bullet points about the product. One thing that isn't specifically mentioned is that there's no talc in the Fleur de Lis powder, unlike Tatcha's. Talc can be an irritant for some people.

  • Old Japanese secret for smooth, soft, flawless, porcelain looking skin
  • Water-activated enzyme powder of Rice Bran, Papaya, Red Algae, Green Tea, Camu Camu and Spirulina absorbs the dirt and oil from the pores, quickly heals blemishes and balances the natural oils in the skin.
  • Super gentle smoothing and restoring natural exfoliant that you can use daily
  • All natural no emulsifiers, no preservatives, no artificial fragrances, no detergents of any kind, perfect for sensitive skin. Promotes skin rejuvenation, gives smoother, brighter and more even textured complexion. Naturally scented with Roman Chamomile flowers. Available other scents: French Lavender, Madagascar Vanilla, and Unscented.
  • Perfect for treatment of wrinkles and pigmentation, effortlessly reveals baby-soft, glowing skin

Re: Exfoliator recommendations needed

The best exfoliator that I have ever used (including Kate's) is Ole H's 3 step peel. The first step is a gentle scrub which you massage on the skin then rinse off. The 2nd step is the acid step which is not harsh at all. Just a clear liquid you apply all over. The instructions read to leave it on for 3 minutes before applying the 3rd step (which neutralizes the acid) but I could leave it on for much longer as I never felt even the slightest twinge of burning or any discomfort whatsoever.

Once you apply the 3rd step, you leave that on for a bit then rinse everything off. My face has never felt as soft or smooth as it does after this peel nor has it ever looked so clear ...... almost like glass. I also have never experienced any of my serums or creams absorbing as thoroughly as they do after I use this peel. And that lasts for a few days. It has truly been an amazing product for me.

I have used so many scrubs and chemical exfoliators through the years and can honestly say Ole's 3 step is by far the best I've ever used myself. Maybe my skin just likes this formulation better than it has others.

I think we all get our favs so it just comes down to finding one that really gives you the best end results you are hoping for.
