I have just started to become interest in using essential oils for health and beauty benefits. I recently bought an immunity blend and the day it came in the mail I started to feel a cold coming on. I applied it multiple times a day ( this one way topical) and I have to say while I still had a bit of a sniffle it never really bloomed into a full blown cold. I'm thinking there may be something to using oils in this way.
Would love to have any recommendations on where to get the best oils, how to use them effectively and what kind of diffuser to buy.
TIA

I know that Young Living oils are supposed to be the very best and you will pay a hefty price. I used to '' belong'' and had a customer number that I kept for years but I don't think I have it any more. Anyway, their Purification was great to add to water and use as a room spray, or to disinfect things. Rocky Mountain oils has a lot of "recipes" that I used, but wasn't that thrilled with their oils. Just check online and you'll find what you're looking for. I never got into the diffusers but would like to. I tried, but it got to be too expensive because I wanted to use it every day!

I use Edens Garden oils. My mom has bought many Doterra oils so we compared the ones that she has to my Edens Garden. Neither one of us could tell a difference. Edens Garden is soooooo much less expensive. They also have a lot of information on their website.
Whatever you choose, make sure it is 100% essential oils and not "fillers" mixed in.

you mention 'applying' essential oils, please make sure you get advice about this practice. Essential oils, unless diluted, are not ment to be applied directly to the skin. In fact, those of us who handle them in undiluted form usually wear gloves. I certainly do. You can google information about use and safety from many on line sites.

I've been using EOs for a very long time. They have many uses! If you get a chance to read this book you will know everything about them. Bought mine from amazon used $6.
This is the diffuser I use and recommend. It's a nebulizer-type. Uses less oil and there's no clean up! Amazon for $129...I know this is steep but when you consider the cost of expensive oils, it pays for itself in no time flat.
I know many people love Young Living oils. They cost a lot. I have found pipingrock dot com has oils, equal to if not better, at a much more affordable price. Please check them out when you get the chance.![]()

I love EO. As a terrible allergry/ asthma suffer I can smell an unpure EO! Not so much "smell" the difference, but an unpure one will trigger my allergies and the pure one will not.
I have had luck with
Mountain Rose Herb
Eden Garden
Rocky Mountain
I like to keep essential oils in glass rollerball applicators for ease of use (Amazon)
I also have diffusers I bought from Amazon. I just picked the top rated.

If you have cats, I would not use a diffuser. Essential oils are dangerous for cats since their livers can't filter them out, so they build up and can kill your cat.

I've started using essential oils for home fragrance, in a diffuser in the bedroom, but mostly in an electric fragrance warmer with a bit of water. I like Plant Guru oils, everything purchased from Amazon. I have never found a peppermint candle to my liking, but peppermint oil is one of my favorites now.

I avoid Young Living oils due to unethical business practices. Young Living, doTerra, and Natural Solutions Foundation were all warned by the FDA in 2014 because they were making false claims about the benefits of their oils. They claimed the oils were anti-virals and could prevent Ebola (and autism, Parkinson's, cancer, and more). That is patently false. No oils prevent, cure, or kill Ebola or any of those other things. Anything promising to cure Ebola, autism, Parkinson's, or anything else is snake oil, not a reputable essential oil.
You can read more about it here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2014/09/24/fda-warns-three-companies-against-m...
And here's the letter the FDA sent to Young Living: http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/2014/ucm416023.htm
I like oils to help with some things, like the symptoms of a stuffy nose. They're great as a replacement for Vick's Vaporub. They don't "cure" anything.

@Drythe Many essential oils can be applied directly to the skin without dilution. Some, referred to as hot oils, do need to be diluted with a carrier oil. As you said, worth a quick google to find out.
