My vote is to see a dermatologist as well: what you are describing doesn't sound like garden variety dry skin-unless you are out in the elements without protection.

I've never tried those Konjac sponges @just bee. Do they exfoliate? Can you use them everyday?

@SilleeMee

I use mine daily -- I try to use it every time I wash my face.  I use the one for sensitive skin and it's a gentle exfoliation.

@Nightowlz,

Did you ever buy those Ecotools muslin cloths? For me they have been a game changer! They work so well in gentle exfoliating. My skin is so smooth I can't stand it.Woman Very Happy

@SilleeMee

I'm in love with my EcoTools Konjac sponges.

@just bee

I bought a konjac sponge once, but it didn't seem to do much.  Is there much of a difference in quality across brands, or is it maybe that my skin just requires something more exfoliating?

@mistriTsquirrel

The one I've been using is very gentle (EcoTools for sensitive skin) but it's harder to find now that drugstore.com is gone.  I've been looking at some on Amazon -- it's a set of different color sponges -- but I expect those will be different from what I'm used to.  There are a lot of different ones out there so I'm not surprised that some are better than others.

I've always washed my face with nothing more than water, my cleanser and my fingers.  Now that I use the sponge, my face looks and feels better.  It's an inexpensive tool -- I used to order a bunch when they were on sale.  I replace the sponge every three months.

@just bee

Thanks for the info.  I'm trying to do things differently with my skin because my old routine stopped working.

Oh, don't get me started.  The whole point of the ComPact thread was to find what works and stick with it.  I did that.  I found what works, but then the company discontinued their products.

But you're right -- our skin and hair just change abruptly.  Usually five minutes after we've stockpiled the products that had been working for us.

@mistriTsquirrel. Thank you for your kindness.  Yes, as you suspected, I ordered the oil not the shortening.  But- it's ok because the Baobab oil far surpasses palm oil in nutritive and protective function.  Add marula, moringa, argan Squalane and I'll have a superior moisturizer, one without any of the components that cause irritation, inflammation ( at least for me, different people have idiosyncratic reactions even to "natural" ingredients).

I used to to mix almond oil, grape seed oil etc in Cetaphil for my daughters.  Then I learned what ingredient decks reveal about a product and its manufacturers.  Turns out Cetaphil cleanser has nothing but carcinogens and fluff, the cream relies on petrolatum for efficacy.  Not exactly what we bargained for.  The gallon of coconut oil for 25 dollars or so gives me a carrier vehicle better than Cetaphil cream at prices that balance out the cost of the actual active ingredients like Squalane. I am positively giddy.  Getting older, facing " challenges" , living in the high desert where the sun broils , the air is thin and dry, the weather volatile have left my skin parched, almost sore and you ladies have given me the perfect solution.  Thanks to ALL.

@CoG  Aww, well I hope the coconut oil works out alright.  Like the shortening, it has so many uses, so that's good.  And you can always try the shortening in the future.  I still have coconut oil around for oil-pulling, makeup removal, a hair and scalp mask before I wash my hair, etc.  I even used to put a little of it in my coffee in the morning when I could still drink coffee.  And I put it in lip balms whenever I make any.  I was thinking about melting some shea butter and coconut oil down together, letting the mixture cool and then using the mixer to whip it, to see if it would make a good body butter.  Maybe even add a little almond oil or something to that.  So many recipes to try, so little time.  Smiley Wink
