Dry Lips - Vaseline versus Aquaphor - Good to know

This is good information for those with dry lips.

Petroleum is a great protective barrier for the skin, but that's where the benefits end. Why? Because petroleum jelly, like Vaseline for example, doesn't have moisturizing properties. It's an occlusive that locks hydration in but doesn't absorb it. It keeps skin soft and supple and boosts moisture levels, but it does not hydrate. Vaseline does not function as a humectant, which attracts moisture to the dermis.

Aquaphor is an occlusive that contains humectants, making it a great option because it hydrates first and foremost, then seals that hydration in so the lips can begin their healing journey. Aquaphor also contains emollients that attract moisture through the film it creates on the outer layer of the lips' skin, per Cleveland Clinic.

I bought Aquafor a few months ago for the first time after reading so many rave reviews about it here on the Beauty forum.  I love it.  First lip product that has actually worked.

Re: Dry Lips - Vaseline versus Aquaphor - Good to know

The dermatologist gave me a small tube of Aquaphor to use on the incision after removing a large mole on my back.  I figure if it's good enought for the dermatologist, I'm not going to avoid it.

Many of the hairball remedies for cats contain petrolatum/mineral oil which is ingested.  I have no issue with either product.

If they can find a better source and way to produce it other than gasoline, I would change my mind.

I have always been on the Aquaphor side.   When I had radiation the hospital gave me packets of it to use on my skin in that area.  It really helped me through it and yes it does also help with dry lips.

Aquaphor ointment contains 41% petrolatum (Vaseline) plus mineral oil.

Aquaphor lip contains some petrolatum in some of their lip products.
