You can still get hyperpigmentation even if you stay out of the sun or wear sunscreen. The production of melanin can be triggered by more than just sunlight. It can be hormonal or can result from injury to the skin where scars become dark. Heat can also trigger melanin production...i.e. laser treatments.

Re: Drugstore facial product that fades dark spots?

@Sue98  I was looking at products on the Origins' website.  There is a moisturizer that fades dark spots.  In the reviews, there are two reviews where the women have used the product for quite a few years and had results early on first month or so.  Check it out.  It's not drugstore price but not outrageous.

Another ingredient to try is azelaic acid. I use it in rx strength for mild acne, rosacea and it also is great at reducing pigment. I use finacea 15% gel. You can get it cheaper from ADC.

@SilleeMee- I also have a question about your post.  I see the tretinoin is in different strengths.  Does it take the strongest one to be effective?  The only retinol I've used is SSC Night Cream A & I'm not sure what strength it is.  It may be working a little on my spots & I think the Dermappeal is helping a little.  It is a slow process!  Thank you for sharing this information.

No, you do not need a Rx to buy hydroquinone or tretinoin (Retino-A) from ADC. When you go to place your order, there will be a page that shows a place to put your doctor's name and answer a few medical questions. Just skip the doctor's name part and answer the questions then hit 'continue' to the payment page. Payment can be made with e-checks. This method of payment requires that you provide ADC with your bank routing and checking account numbers. Don't worry, this is a very secure way of paying and is more secure than using a cc. It is exactly the same as writing a paper check, only the transaction is done electronically and doesn't require your personal signature like a paper check would. Once your echeck is accepted by ADC then the transaction takes a few days to appear on your bank records. It will appear as a 'debit' with iwebdynamics as the description. Your order will take approx three weeks to arrive in your mailbox and does not require your signature to receive it.

Don't be afraid to order multiples. ADC is very good about sending long-dated products. There are good discounts given when you buy multiples, too. Shipping charge is $15 for purchases less than $130 (??) and it's free after that amount. Right now there is a special free-shipping code for purchases of $75 or more. That code is on the homepage, right side.Woman Happy

Tretinoin at it's lowest strength, usually .025%, is much stronger than most any drugstore retinol products. Using tretinoin with higher concentrations is not equivalent to it's efficacy. Your individual skin will determine what strength will be most accepting and keep in mind that not everyone can use tretinoin w/o side effects. Should start out with the lowest .025% then after a period of several months,  go to a higher one.

If you had to compare strength of retinol to that of tretinoin, which I hate to do because there is no real scientific basis to make such a comparison...but theoretically a 1% retinol product is almost like using a .025% tretinoin cream and that is really stretching the effects of the retinol at its very best.

@SilleeMee@ - one more question please - if I am targeting 3 spots on my face would I use the tretinoin only on those spots & not whole face? Thanks again for your detailed explanations.

@2penny  I think @SilleeMee would agree to use it on entire face, lobes, neck & maybe chest. If trying to fade spots, I assume you wouldn’t want those areas to fade  lighter than the rest of your face.
